They have $6 million left to sign six players for next year. It isnt terrible only if they make some big moves.

They probably should have waited to see what he could do in the playoffs. He has gelled quite nicely with Staal so it makes sense they want to keep him for 5 years.

This deal should take him to the age of about 34, which is about the right time when Carolina can offer Semin to someone else, and get some youngsters in return.

Came (no pun intended) for the joke, left satisfied.

He's a Russian with a funny name, so it must be a terrible contract.
I wonder how many people in this thread actually watch Hurricanes games? I know I don't.

Leaves them about 11 mil to round out 13 forwards. With 4 league min guys for the fourth line making 2 million you have 9 mil left for your third line and two more wingers.
There defense is going to have to be cheap or young to make this work. Probably means no Marc Staal. But it is definately managable.

I watch their games sometimes, he's easily been their best forward other than E.Staal. More of a playmaker than a sniper this season though.

DING DING DING he hit the jack pot but he has earned it he has played well Carolina.
5 per would of been about right 2 mill over payment.

Fair enough. It's just the guy has been known to be extremely talented but lazy and unmotivated. Hopefully he can keep it up and Carolina can get their money's worth.

at least with Perry you are never going to question his passion and effort throughout the whole deal
Semin has a checkered past when it comes to that stuff, including being called out by former teammates, and not only this year, but in past years when he was still a capital, and I don't think it's a 'Russian' thing, anyone who watched Caps games the last few years saw it
it's possible he has changed, and the Canes should know, but it's a risk
I think it's just as likely that he shows up in camp next year with 30 extra pounds as it is that he has a season as good as this year over the next 5

Perry Stats:
557 214 240 454 51 - Reg Season
54 18 25 43 4 - Playoffs
Semin Stats:
499 205 233 438 83 - Reg Season
51 15 19 34 -1 - Playoffs
They've got pretty similar numbers, with Perry bringing in roughly 1.6mill more per season and 3 extra years. Seems fair in comparison to Perry and Getlafs deals

LOL at the NHLPA sheep that go with the flow.
Stars will get 50% of a teams' cap. Where is the equity in that. Stupid union fails.

Yeah I'm going to go with this.
It's propably overpaying him some, but not necessarily that much. Guys that put up a lot of points cost a lot of money. Nothing new there.
The number of years seems excessive though, but if he's been able to transition into more of a playmaker he could still have even more than five good years in him. Skilled playmakers that can score don't generally drop in production very fast.
And I don't see that flaky part. He's been relatively consistent in his point production, and actually has a couple of very good playoff years from 2008 and 2009 and didn't do so bad in 2011 either.
