The Flames first round picks have been especially dissapointing. Rounds 4-7 aren't going to make or break an organization, and the Flames haven't really been that bad at drafting late (Brodie, Gaudreau, Moss, Pardy etc). They usually snag one NHLer out of the later rounds, which is really all you can ask for.

It is the picks made in the top 60 that really make the Flames look bad in comparison to other orgs

I disagree with this assessment. We have no idea who is making the decisions in the Flames organization.

It's difficult to gauge how well a scout is performing at his duties without seeing his draft list.

For all we know, Todd Button had defenders going Weber, Suter, Phaneuf in the 2003 draft and Sutter flipped the script on him and went Dion.

I have to believe that his longevity in the organization has at least something to do with his particular recommendations exceeding the draft results of the Flames. I don't see how he could stand up to evaluation any other way.

In any other organization I would agree with you but the Flames stubborn refusal to change, regardless of outcome tends to lead me to think it is an organization that is influenced more by nepotism and freindship rather than results.

Which is why I said I have to believe the alternative.

If it's as you describe (and what I fear) then it's time to pick a new team.

I've been a West Ham fan for years, a good year is when we stay in the Premiership, a bad year is when we go down a league, the Flames will stumble into success eventually especially given the nature of the league these days, unfortunatly I think it will take a while, around 4 years after Iggy and Kipper leave at the shortest.

In the end its just a game.
