When I think of the millions of wasted tax dollars by the Harper government this is nothing. Furthermore what a classless move by the media to even make this a story, the man is dead let him rest in peace!

Its funny that a bunch of the positive comments in this thread have an added disclaimer that the poster doesn't like Layton or the NDP.
Like him or not, Jack Layton provided the voter something that federal Canadian politics hadn't seen in quite some time; a charismatic and in some ways inspiring leader. How he earned the seats to become official opposition just went to show how starved Canadians are for a leader and not just a politician. This all in spite of having a hilarious platform that would have bankrupted the government.
He deserved a state funeral

I know he was a feel good story because of his resurgence and battle with Cancer but I don't think Jack Layton was inspiring (politically) or charismatic.
He got lucky in one election because the federal liberals have been putting on a clinic over the last decade on how to turn a party's complete dominance of federal politics into a completely embarrassing #### show.
All that being said he was the leader of the official opposition and had a place in Canadian politics for a long time. I'm in the against a state funeral and spending $368k but only because of this thread. Had I read about this in the paper I probably would have skipped right over the story.

If 5 years ago somebody said it would cost 1 penny to put Layton in the ground I would have thought that was money well spent.

Better than what he would have cost taxpayers as Prime Minister.

Canadians have spent far more tax Dollars keeping CBC on life-support in their hospice.

Yeah I miss the Chretien years when they didn't only waste taxpayer money they stole stole it. Envelopes full of taxpayer money exchanging hands over restaurant tables. Those were the days.

He wasn't inspiring or charismatic at all. He was a d-bag and a blowhard full of empty promises that he knew he would never have to fulfill based on his stupid ideas.
His rising to power shows nothing about him and everything about how stupid voters are in the East (especially Quebec) and what a complete disaster the Liberal Party turned into.
Good riddance. The country is much better off with him out of politics. It is unfortunate we have to waste money on a piece of garbage like him.

Better to steal a few million than to waste billions (i.e. omnibus crime bill), IMO.

this is hilarious. "His rising to power shows nothing about him", really?
What's it like to hate anything and everything? Don't you get tired?
Extra points for supporting your well founded opinions making incredibly sweeping generalizations with sound reasoning.

Jack Layton's whole persona was summed up by him pushing a girl out of the way so he could get face time on CTV during the Canada hockey game in 2010.
He kinda was a ######bag and since he knew there was no chance of the NDP becoming the party in power, he really could promise anything he wanted.

And the difference between your post and moons' is that you present reasoning for an opinion and not baseless rhetoric and insults that detract from a perfectly acceptable line of thinking.
