I think poor posture is to blame for a great deal of back pain. We don't pay enough attention to ergonomics at work and play and our society probably spends far too much time sitting and sitting in bad positions. I know this is most of the reason for back pain I get. As mentioned above strengthening your back muscles is very important in addition to good posture.
Sometimes my back is definitely out and I need somebody to crack my back, cue the chiropractor. I can definitely tell when it is out sometimes and outside of getting someone to walk on your back which is extremely hit or miss or lift you up and try to crack you (difficult to find ppl who can do this) it seems like chiropractors are the only people who can fix this.
So yeah exercise and good posture are the long term fixes IMO. Sometimes a day of bad posture at the computer or laying down reading in a strange position or watching TV will lead to my back needing to be cracked. Work related bending or sitting can require massage or chiropractic adjustments IMO to keep your back up to snuff. I understand why some are skeptical but after having gone to chiropractors on and mostly off for a couple decades I don't think they are pointless. If I did I wouldn't go again.
Now some definitely want you to go more often than is needed because they are trying to make money. Gotta watch out for those. And given the nature of what they are doing, you don't want to visit a crappy one. I think it has its time and place.
