Going through the union offer the most ridiculous thing is Job Security within 50km of your current post office. This concept of Job Security in a dying Business is just so out of place.

When unions strike for Safety and working conditions they are necessary.

Striking for wages and job security is terrible. If you want more money work get a job that pays you what you feel you are worth.

I put on the 660 news tonight on the way home and they only mentioned delivery to still be in place for pension cheques. They did mention May 24 as the earliest we will know officially if they strike. Also that it appears both sides are very far apart from an agreement.

This comment is a pile of crap. Now, I don't know the issues between this current union and the employer but come on man. The government is one of the worst employers around.

I used to think that there was no need for unions until I obtained a government job. The managers in the government are so incompetent that unions are needed.

I will say this, I do not get a long with most people in unions because they do not have my line of thinking. I do not protect lazy people and I am not politically correct.

If it was merit based instead of the BS with unions your first part wouldn't be a problem.

The protection of the lazy and stupid is exactly what unions and specifically the Canada Post union does.

I don't disagree with this statement, however, if the government was left to it's own decisions, any service provided to the general public would be delivered by a bunch of high school drop outs that they could pay minimum wage. If the government is going to cut employees, fine, but the public also needs to accept the reduction in service.

Actually most mail is delivered by that type of person. Virtually all superboxes in Calgary have mail delivered by contract workers who get paid #### and work long, tough hours.

Canada Post employees are useless and overpaid. Anyone who tries is threatened by their boss (a la Newman on Seinfeld) because they make everyone else look bad.

That maybe the case, I don't know enough about that organization to comment otherwise. However, my experience in with my agency is this. People always complain about the union protecting lazy people. I can tell you that 95% of the reason these idiots still have a job in my agency is because of management, not the union. Management is incompetent. First, the wrong people are promoted in the government. Second, they have no training on how to properly document incompetent people. Thirdly, upper management has no will to even try and deal with these people.

I can tell you 100% that it is not the union in my agency that protects these idiots, it is management. In one case, lower management recommended a 30 day suspension for this employee. The director has the final say and he said a letter of reprimand was sufficient.

People need to know that in a lot of cases it is the management of the government that protects these people not the unions.

I wasn't really talking about Canada Post, but the public service in general. Yes, delivering mail doesn't require much education and should not be a job that pays the same as a nurse or teacher. I don't even know what they make for a wage.

Get another job then....which in your own words makes your comment "a pile of crap".

From doing a little research the starting salary for a postal worker is 30,000 a year, for a job where you drop envelopes in mailboxes.

You can't tell me that the government is the worst employer around. I think thats reserved for fast food, and retail where they actually work really hard for very little.

Dropping mail that's already wrapped up and addressed in a mailbox after you drive the little CP car there is so much easier than the jobs most kids have where they drop off a ton of flyers at your house, you have to manually assemble like 200 individual flyers, then you have to go out and deliver them to the entire neighborhood...by walking, on your bike, or with a wagon.

The result of this strike will just result in another raise in postal rates for Canadians and accelerate the abandonment of CP for private couriers.

Haha...that's gold.

I know everyone hates Union's and over the years a few posters have shared their views on how a Union has messed up pentions/benefits for family members, but you have to hand it to Unions a bit. I mean if you're an average worker you're never going to be rich, so why not band together and force employers/government to maximize your benefits/pay.

I say good for them.

Stupid Canada Post. So much for getting my credit card in the mail anytime soon.

Delivering mail isn't exactly rocket appliances, but it's not as simple as children delivering flyers. What it is is menial and basic for an adult. It's unskilled labour that doesn't involve labour, but requires a functioning brain.

What gets me about this potential strike is just how ridiculous it is for a union to be making demands of a monopoly in a dying industry. What ya gonna do? Demand job security? It's simply hilarious.

The whole world is already turning to electronic delivery because it's more reliable, cheaper, and preferred. Postal companies need to be coming up with ideas to maintain their viability, not worrying about guaranteeing some 27 year old "lifer" a job until he's 65.

LOL @ unions. Get your heads out of your asses, folks. Even livestock are smart enough to move on to the next water source when it becomes obvious the one they're drinking from is drying up.
