They are suspending driver's licenses for boating with a BAC of .05, IMO this is very very wrong. Knocking back 2 beer while fishing at the cottage should not result in a driver's license suspension.

I want to thank a Pinner post and there's no MF thanks button! WTF?
Well said, Pinner.

motorboating should never result in losing your license.

I'm not even talking about the boating story.
And if the law dictates that people who show medical signs of repeated alcohol abuse are to be reported to the MoT, then it is irrelevant if she drives drunk or not.
You think the doctor's going to call her up and ask if she drives drunk, and then decide not to obey the law if she says no?
This is no different than a girl walking into to a doctor's office with a black eye and a swollen lip. It doesn't matter how many times she swears she just fell down the stairs, a doctor is still required to report it.

Ok, we agreed in the GMG thread that dumb associations like this are just dumb, so why are you associating the two? A motorcycle is driven on streets with other motorcycles and cars, and is licenced by the province for operating moter vehicles on streets.
Boating and pleasurecraft licenses are different licenses. Completely different machines operated in completely different settings under completely different circumstances.

I'm not going to look any further, there was a case last summer of a guy losing his driver's license for snoozing on an air mattress while impaired.
Quote:
One thing Zimmer did not envision when he wrote the law was this: someone losing their licence for canoeing while drunk. Or, say, for paddleboating, or floating down a river in an inflatable kayak, drunk. These might seem like harmless summer activities(canoe crashes tend to be relatively low speed, low impact events, after all), but in the cold, unflinching eyes of the law, they are offences under the Criminal Code, and therefore fall under Ontario's new legislation. Drink and canoe in Ontario this summer and be prepared to lose your driver's licence for a year.

If you're caught drinking and walking you should have your feet amputated. Good luck on crutches for you now drunky! Save up and buy a lil rascal, which will soon be confiscated for using it while drinking. BRING BACK PROHIBITION.
This seems just as reasonable as some of the thinking in here

It is not like she has a history of getting drunk and driving (only 1 speeding ticket in her life) or even getting drunk in general. When she was drinking this night she was upset about the death of a friend and still got to the hospital in an ambulance not a car.
|
She got plastered one night and showed up in the emergency room with a broken arm. A week later, when her family doctor got the test results back, he saw medical evidence of a history of alcohol abuse and followed the law by reporting it.
This isn't a case of someone having a few beers and losing their license. It's not even a case of someone having 400 beers and losing their license. It's a case of someone with a long history of alcohol abuse having their license suspended and being asked to go to treatment.

The pleasurecraft license is a joke in the first place. Taking it away is going to do nothing. IMO a vehicle with a motor is a vehichle with a motor. Sled, boat, whatever. A DUI on any of them should result in a potential loss/suspension of a driver's license.

Is that what you call an apology ?
So after you go to court NEXT year and pay your $5,000 legal fees, you get your licsense back, seems fair.

Okie dokey. It disturbs me that you're so willing to give up your rights in a black and white way like this. The spectrum that drunk boating covers is huge. A trucker can lose his license for trolling in a lake, on the weekend, at 5 kph, after having two beer. You're ok with this. That's f'n ######ed.
If you're envisioning a crazy teenager driving daddy's $50,000 speedboat with the throttle all the way down, while completely gooned, then fine. But you do realize that losing a boating license for impairment can come under either of those circumstances, right?
You people trip me right out.

Why is it so difficult for some people to accept that they cant drink and operate a vehicle? People can still be killed regardless if its a fishing boat or a car.

If my drivers license is in jeopardy whilst operating a boat, why are they two different licenses, and why do I have to go get a boating license and pay seperately for it? Why isn't it one license to operate "all motor vehicles" on any terrain?

Have you ever been boating? On a sunny day, they two go together imeasurably.
I don't agree with the law here in Ontario. I would NEVER drive a car drunk, but have no problem doing so (morally) in a boat. Of course, I am not driving a Donzi at over 50mph down the lake. Also, I'm not talking about fall over wasted drunk, just normal drunk.

Because it's a lot easier to operate a boat while drinking than a car.
