Most of the credible, legitimate non grifters seem to agree that artificial sweeteners are fine. Its another example in a long line of examples of how Joe Blo is terrible at interpreting studies let alone somehow analyzing thousands of studies on something that has had a lot of attention in the nutritional science community.
That 25 year study has enough confounders to raise an eyebrow on why it goes against other accepted studies.
During Covid I moonlighting as a guy who read studies and somehow made conclusions without any training whatsoever. Over time ive leaned to try and excercise some social media literacy and use that energy to find the unbiased experts who can interpret it for you. That in and of itself is fraught with danger. Our own biases are so difficult to overcome.
Since ive outed myself as a guy who listens to people talking at me on social media, my go to guy for interpreting nutritional science studies is Dr Idz.

You can find a study with pretty much any results you want, if you're actively looking. What is the consensus, and like anything "bad" for you, what is the dose?
I'm a near-daily diet pop drinker so maybe I should cut down, but I've got other #### going on that'll likely kill me first.
And I cannot stand sugary drinks now. They feel awful in my mouth and don't even taste better.

We all know that pubmed isn't a database of exclusively peer reviewed studies right?
Right?

But when I do have pop I tend to go for the more niche stuff, which often does have real sugar.

"Real sugar", or sucrose as the scientists call it, is 50-50 glucose-fructose.
HFCS is around 40% fructose.
It's called fructose because it was originally discovered in... fruit.
So stop eating fruit.

HFCS starts as glucose and then they #### around with it to turn some into fructose.
I really need to get back to work.

They use these things called "enzymes". They're deadly.

I feel like we just went through this with COVID. And now with Tylenol and autism. Did you know there’s a study from MIT showing the link between Tylenol and autism? Yeah, well, you know, give tylenol to your kids if you want but you should probably read it to be informed.
Or… rely on the general consensus.
I don’t think there’s a scenario where having a regular soda is better than a diet soda, health wise. Soda is legitimately one of the worst things you can have. Not to say diet soda is healthy… but some common sense here.

Studies are beginning to that show your posts are hazardous to people's health.

It's an un-harmful hill to die on! I admit my views may be tainted by watching a friend get himself absolutely addicted to diet coke, deny it, and then struggle like a MF for a month trying to quit before admitting "holy ####, I was addicted to this stuff." I used to chew a lot of sugar free gum, and anecdotally looking back it sure seems like I was addicted to it.
I guess what I'm getting at is occasional drinks, either way are not going to be life changing for you. It just doesn't matter that much. Comparing one drink of sugar free to one with sugar is kinda meaningless, it's the dose that starts to matter. The issue is if you drink them every day, some people multiple litres, there is scientific evidence you are doing harm, through over-consumption of sugars, or the other less directly correlated effects of some sugar free substitutes. If you are drinking diet every day to lose weight, you might be better having water, even though the soda is zero calorie, for reasons those studies explain. That's not logical on the surface, but appears to be the case given how the body responds.
Moderation is of course key, but some people aren't good at that.
Anyway, I think I've died sufficiently on this hill, you can bury me under a New Coke can.

lol, what's more likely: he was addicted to Diet Coke or he was addicted to a little caffeine hit throughout the day?

It's a little caffeine hit, I'm not sure it was enough to make him react how he did. But he was always a weird one. Redheads, you know?

The VFW in Garrison Minnesota has Bingo every weekend. Last weekend it was Vibrator Bingo - no misprint there. The prizes were, no word of a lie, sex toys. Anyhow a mother and daughter showed up for bingo wearing these sweaters. I damn near spit out my beer!
