I wonder what was said in the room after the 1st period.
Was quite a turnaround from a typical last year type of performance.

Probably nothing beyond the usual. It's preseason.

Flames player good = sign of things to come! Exciting!
Flames player bad = it’s preseason, doesn’t mean anything.

Yeah, it's almost like people think there's a difference between vets and rookies or something.
Tell you what: Let's all pretend Coronato's performance in his first NHL camp is meaningless because it's only preseason, but that the veterans on the team are giving everything they have to give and won't be any better once the real games start. Will that make you happier?

Meaghan Mikkelson had some great commentary on the postgame show. She talked about “catapult units” which measure players’ workload. She talked about how Coronato pulls the puck before shooting it. I thought those comments were interesting, and I learned something. Meaghan’s doing a really great job.

I remember when Makarov was a “rookie” and had a terrible pre-season. I was assured he was a veteran and knew when to start playing. And it turned out - he did.

Is that who was doing color during the game? I liked what she was saying but she sounded like Sarah Palin to my hears, it was distracting.

Yes, that's what a woman's voice sounds like. Great backhanded compliment.

Well, that isn't what he said - Sarah Palin has an annoying voice so it's fair to compare if that is how she sounded to him. Great manipulation of his original comment.

He wasn't very good last night.
You're not an apologist if you don't join the crew that wants to take a preseason game and call it definitive proof that he's going to have a bad year.

Yeah from what I saw, he was shaky and leaky. getting scored on during your goal announcement is a killer and it almost happened twice. Goalies tend to take a bit longer to get things going in preseason (at least that is what I am telling myself). I thought the team defense did well to limit the chances and shots.

I feel like goaltending in the NHL is primarily mentality and confidence though, so I mean it isn’t a good sign at all. We need a goalie in Markstrom that starts to believe in himself again because when he does he is lights out but when he doesn’t he looks like last year and his candle is close to getting snuffed out.

Coronato looked awesome last night with Backlund. Even though those two look like they have chemistry, I wonder if they try Coronato on the top line at some point before the preseason is over.

After last night you wonder if that is the next step. Seems like it, but do coaches refrain from that because they don't want to rush it? Sustained performances like that over time and definitely he'll get a shot up top.

Meaghan Mikkelson has been a revelation, but can we talk about Derek Wills?
I am wondering if he has taken the legitimate criticism about his overtly homeristic calls and opinions to heart, because it sure feels like he is now going out of his way to be critical about the most benign, or obviously tedious things. And boy, this feigned level of "criticism" is about as insightful as you would expect.
His take on Ruzicka in the postgame show was just bonkers. I was happy that Steinberg set him straight on this hilariously bad take, but then, he doubled down to suggest that Coleman should be playing ahead of him because he once scored 20 goals. Yikes.
I am so tired of Derek Wills. Thank god that Mikkelson is adding such a much needed breath of fresh air and sensibility to that broadcast. I hope she gets promoted to the TV colour gig in short order.
