Sutter's early years as a GM were strong. He then dumped quality players for bad return because they didn't fit his approach, drafted poorly and made a bunch of bad deals.

Now is the time to fire Treliving because:
-He doesn't deserve to hire another coach
-A new GM could use time to work for the team before handling the trade deadline and the draft
 -The team has accomplished nothing
 -It would send a message
-They have guys like Maloney and Conroy and even Snow that can temporarily step in. Moloney has experience (and was actually pretty decent all things considered). Conroy and Snow have been in the organization forever. As have Button and Sutter if I am correct.

			My prediction:
VAN fires Jim Benning after Ottawa catches them in the standings.

CGY fires Brad Treliving after Ottawa overtakes them in the standings.

CGY hires Jim Benning. Can't you see it? It would be SO VERY FLAMES.

It’s really that simple

Feaster gave him a team with the pieces that he could build on, the only playoff round he won was with the team he inherited.

7 years and pretty little to show for it right now.

Culture starts at the top. He says the buck stops with him.

Good. Time for one last process. The dismissal process

I called into overtime tonight (for the first time ever!) and said the Flames' coaching and management needs to take more risks and ended by advocating for a Matthew Phillips recall.
Seriously though, how many seasons of this beautiful Gaudreau contract are the Flames going to waste by not making the necessary adjustments?

Heard it. Good job

Yes, the Gaudreau contract has one more year, and is up when Tkachuk has to be qualified at nine (9) million

This was supposed to be the window

Frankly, the owners should be on this

It's such a shame that every year since 2015 (when he brought in Schlemko and that worked out well) management has gone out and gotten worse defensemen (Grossman, Nesterov, Bartkowski, Fantenberg, Gustafsson) than the guys we have in the system (Kulak, Kylington) only to see those acquisitions look gross in big moments.

Brouwer was on the intermission today talkingabout the Senators' youth... about all the youth on those great Blackhawks teams... I don't think it's a coincidence. You gotta trust the kids in expanded roles.

Agreed 100%

For as much flack as we give GG for being a bad coach, at least he gave the young guys a chance. Mangiapane, Rasmussen, Lazar, Kulak, Wotherspoon, Foo, Lomberg, etc were all 20-22 during his tenure and got looks in the NHL. The most ATOI that Bennett has averaged during his career was during the GG era.

Conversely, the only youngins that have played under Ward's watch are Kylington (27 games) and Yelesin (4 games)...plus the 3 games Gawdin got this season when both Backlund and Ryan were out.

Ward's refusal to trust young players is absolutely mind bottling.

Also, if Treliving isn't going to hire a veteran head coach with a proven track record, he needs to completely break the mold by hiring a young (but promising) coach like Chicago and Ottawa did, or a proven Euro coach (e.g. Gronborg or Jalonen).

And I think that's right to my point... instead of taking what might be a risk in giving Kylington or Kulak that rope, they've intstead opted repeatedly to spend assets on guys who are mediocre known quantities.

And that extends to other parts of the lineup, too — why Nordstrom and Robinson are playing over guys like Phillips and Philp is beyond me.

Liquidating assets for draft picks might be one of the easiest things a GM can do. Pretty sure Treliving could acquire multiple 1st’s and 2nd’s in short order if he wanted to.

Treliving’s trading of picks is likely driven by organizational direction to make the playoffs. If trading a 3rd for defensive depth helps, you are probably going to do that.

To be fair, and in balance, you should make reference to the picks Treliving has acquired.

You would have to do the same for Sutter. Brad has lost more picks net than Sutter did, by a fairly significant margin.

The Flames are great at bringing these young players up, seeing them have an immediate impact and then seeing them stagnate at 22 or 23. It’s bizarre. Most players at that age improve as time goes on.

Sutter drafted twice in the second round between 03-10
Treliving has drafted in the second round 7 times from 14-20

Flames only had 1 year where they didn’t draft in the 1st round under Sutter where Treliving has 2 but Treliving did trade the 15th pick in 2015 for Hamilton and 3 years later traded Hamilton for the 5th pick in 2015 so the team is only without a 2018 first rounder in the organization right now.

I don’t buy your claim at all up there so please put the work in and prove me wrong.

They can negotiate a deal in advance, but if that doesn't get done they would have to qualify him (which then makes him a UFA 1 year later) or let him walk.

Some fun facts from this season from hell:
Flames are 28th in goals scored per game (2.43). The Oilers are first at 3.59 and 4 of the top 6 teams in league are from the North Division. So, there is an argument that the Flames are actually the worst offensive team in the entire league.

The Flames are 21st in goals against per game (ie, they are in the bottom third of the league in terms of defensive success.)

Interestingly the Flames are only 18th in team save percentage. Suggests that perhaps the goaltending hasn't been as great as many presume.

Anyway, the statistics bear one thing out: this team is okay at goaltending, bad at defence, and absolutely terrible at offence.

 Well done, Mr. Treliving.
