my favorite Nightwish song is actually from their newest album. i was a bit worried when i heard the first samples of Annette singing, i feared they might try to streamline their sound and go too commercial. after getting the CD and first hearing The Poet And The Pendulum though my fears were erased immediately
hold on, you're a Nightwish fan yet you haven't heard their newest album? (even though it's 3 years old now). were you at least aware that Tarja was kicked out and the new vocalist is Anette Olzon?

Please don't expect me to keep up with everything I listen to. Too much music in the world. For the record (excuse the pun) I am a recent convert.
What do you guys recommend to a melodic death metal fan? And I mean newer metal cause I've been out of the loop. I like In Flames, you know bands like Opeth, Katatonia, and to a lesser extent My Dying Bride..... also a huge TOOL fan. I like that slow melodic metal that progresses, if you know what I'm talkin about. Help a brother out!
Slow melodic metal that progresses you say?
Maybe you would enjoy some of Devin Townsend's solo work? It's not death metal... but neither are In Flames.
Ocean Machine is a amazing album, front to back. It's not death metal at all, but it has a very deep, layered sound that builds. Not a bad track on the whole album.
Some songs from his album Addicted. Im not a fan of female vocals (unlike Hemi-Cuda) but I love Anneke Van Giersbergen's voice.
If your looking for something a little heavier, you may enjoy his project Physicist.
And if this still isn't the heavy you are looking for, there is always Strapping Young Lad.
Nightwish is finally working on their next album, i'm stoked. and upon searching for stuff i stumbled across a song with Annette on vocals that i had never heard before
kinda pisses me off that i never heard that before, and that it wasn't included on Dark Passion Play. fantastic song
For people who are waiting for their Nightwish fix, Tarja released her new album What Lies Beneath. It's much better and heavier than her first album (which was crap IMO). Still not at the (old) Nightwish level.
Thought I might bump this thread with a request for some advice from CPuck. I need some good study music and it seems that Metal and well, aggressive music works for me. I tend to listen to a lot of Children of Bodom, Nine Inch Nails(circe The Downward Spiral and The Fragile), Russian Circles, Amon Amarth and Isis.
And for those of you who don't know Russian Circles... they kick ass.
