They also touched on Michkov going 5-8 likely. Something really tells me Montreal is hoping he falls to them. I think the early rumor of them trying for #2 is to throw off the scent that they want him if they think he'll go 3 or 4. Are any of the Canadian sportsbooks allowing betting on who will go at what position?

That's not good enough to be a 3rd line.
If overpaying Looch to be 4LW was a problem last year you didn't really fix the problem.

After all this conjecture, I'm actually starting to think that there won't be much change at all this season in terms of the playing staff. The ol' run it back, but with a new coach.

Coleman Backlund if he is here Duehr. Thats a solid third line that can contribute.

I wonder what Toffoli’s value would be if he is traded at the draft? I haven’t heard anything on Toffoli being moved so it would not surprise me if he stays with the flames. He and his family have had to move a lot over the last 4 years so he might appreciate the opportunity to stay in one place for a while.
If he is traded, however… I think he returns a late first in this draft (25th-32nd overall) for the right team. Alternatively, I could see him getting a couple of second round picks. There are a few teams that could fit that mold… Carolina, Vegas, Detroit, and Buffalo could be a fit.
Teams that miss out on Debrincat or want a cheaper option than him would likely be interested in Toffoli.

I just don't see the Flames trading Tyler Toffoli. Conroy has talked about wanting to add another top 6 winger, why is he getting rid of his best one?

2023/2024 Trade Rumors and Speculation thread
Debrincat’s list of teams he wants to be traded to are interesting… Vegas, Florida, Dallas, Nashville, Tampa and Detroit. Basically either his home town (Detroit) or somewhere with no state income tax.
Detroit likely has the assets to offer the best package if they want him. Problem for Ottawa is that, of those teams, only Detroit and Nashville really have the cap space to take on Debrincat unless equivalent salary is going back. If one of those two teams is not really interested in him then the return could be underwhelming.

Part of me hopes there are enough malcontents that management is forced into a shake-up while their value is high, but I secretly fear that they’ll hang onto those malcontents or trade them away for nothing after a failed bid to chase a cinderella run in typical Calgary Flames fashion. Asset management has never been a strong suit of this organization, and I suspect it comes from the misguided, cynical mantra of the guys at the top.

I don't think they care too much about that, their permanent home is out in LA. His wife lives there almost full time with random trips out here. He'll go where the money is once he hits UFA. Likely be his last NHL deal when the time comes.

I want to keep Toffoli too, but let’s say a contending team that can fit Toffoli overpays for him… Just take it and assure Toffoli you have every intention of re-signing him if he hits free agency.

It's not a 3rd line, it's a 4th line who probably get around 8-9 minutes of even strength minutes per game.
I understand your point in about the cap but Coleman is worth his money.
Also having a third line of Pelletier-Backlund-Dube evens everything out and our bottom two lines are not problematic cap wise.

Those are all competitive teams… except for Detroit.

No state income tax. Warm climate. American cities. As for competitive, is Nashville likely to be more competitive going forward than Ottawa?
Lots of overlap with the list Tkachuk provided. It’s hard to see how anyone can still believe small-market Canadian franchises aren’t at a serious competitive disadvantage in today’s NHL.

If flames give Tyler an extension he would be 32 when it kicks in. At some point flames have to stop paying guys their last contracts. Flames should only be re-signing lindholm and maybe hanafin. They should be seeing what they can get for toffoli and backlund.

Yup. It was floated out a while ago that LA would be where he’d sign a sweet heart deal if he did it.
