That's unfortunate. She is my councilor and I thought she did a reasonably good job but joining a party and the switch to running for mayor disqualifies her from my consideration in the election.

I don’t follow this thread closely. Is the incumbent mayor running? Any challengers announced or likely?

Yes, Mayor Gondek is running for re-election. Joining her are the runner up from last time, Jeromy Farkas, along with the third place finisher, noted Calgary Flames ownership puppet Jeff Davison.

Sonya Sharp took over for Joe Magliocca in Ward 1 in the last election, and she is also running for mayor. I don't like any of the four main candidates, but Sharp has serious money behind her, and I think she has the best shot at winning.

Then you should check out Brian Theissen from The Calgary Party. IMO, he would be grouped in with the "main candidates".

Joey Mags was Ward 2. Sharp took over from Sutherland in Ward 1 when he decided to not run again.

My mistake, my apologies. Thanks for pointing it out.

I like that we are going to have vote splitting between a better Calgary and communities first.

I dunno, there could a strong third challenger in Crazy Town. They'll be running Larry Heather, Artur Pawlowski, and already have Mayor elect Kevin J Johnston for the big chair. Let's see who else they can recruit to Crazy Town over the next few months. Gonna be tight.

Yeah, I couldn't understand why she was front and center with arena deal. She represents Ward 1. I think she's showing who she is now big time.

Communities First is pretty much your UCP slate of candidates. Vote accordingly as you see fit.

Can someone please explain to me the purpose of these parties? One of them literally says we're not doing policies, candidates do that and then we vote on whether we like them as a member group?

Or "unique caucus in Calgary made up of like-minded individuals committed to independently representing our constituents. We prioritize community interests above all, distinguishing ourselves from traditional political parties." Isn't this contradictory to be part of a party but independently represent your community? Am I going crazy?

So basically anyone in the Calgary Party should be a decent choice.

Since Calgary votes for progressive / centrist mayors (and councillors), this is simply the UCP's sad attempt to get tribal politics (ie. their color of blue) into the municipal realm.

They do it under the guise that citizens will more clearly know who they are voting for, because, you know, we're all too stupid to know how to vote in municipal elections without the color of a party attached.

I was at an event recently where Rick Mciver tried to gaslight a room full of people that their intent was to regulate political donations in municipal politics because it would fall in line with their donation rules for political parties. As if there were no other alternative options to deal with that if it were truly their intent.

I think the UPC is frustrated with Calgary voters who will vote for anyone who carries the tag conservative, but when they have to consider policies without parties, they tend to vote quiet liberally, and the believe that by slapping a conservative label on candidates Calgarians will stop considering policy and start electing people who will roll over when the Provincial government proposes objectionable policy for the city.
