Looks like they wanted one that had memorable plot points with a finite end point to work towards that they could go from start to finish.
Voyager or DS9 were perfect for that and I think Voyager is a better choice for a first swing at it.

Thats what Starfleet Academy makes me think of. Just worse and with more plot holes.

I remember play the Star Fleet Academy video game back in I think the 90's (Though the Klingon Academy game was way better.) They managed to recruit Shatner at his hammiest, Checkov, Sulu, and some other pretty famous actors. But the rest of the cast was terrible and the acting was awful, but it still feels better then this show that is probably spending a ton of money per episode.

I think its a mix. I know that Tawney Newsome is involved. I dont know why. I was kind of hoping that her involvement would have grounded the show and really made it 'Star Trek' but now its ages into the future or some nonsense and it looks basically like STD 2.0.
