The same way that Mike Richards contract is crippling the Kings right now?
I have no faith in the league to do the right thing anymore.

Oh I absolutely agree.
I firmly believe that at the end of next season, Hossa will simply be put on LTIR similar to Pronger for the rest of his contract and thus no penalty for the Hawks.
Hawks win 3 Cups with these cap averting deals and will likely never be penalized.

Brodie could be our comparable down the road. Although his contract is only for 4 more years after this. Duncan Keith's was a pretty long contract.

Two things:
- Management has been shrewd and ruthless about who they let go, so they're not handcuffed by the 2-3 bad contracts most teams have.
- Excellent drafting and development allows them to plug holes with cheap, home-grown talent.

Keith's contract is literally cheating the cap in a way that is not at all possible under the current CBA.

Chicago trades non-core assets at peak value the moment that potential cap hit becomes a concern, regardless of positional need, and trusts in their draft and development team. It is how I would like Calgary to operate.

Exactly this. I laugh when people talk up 'Hawks management like they do. They have Toews, Kane, Keith, Hossa and Seabrook. Two of which are on sweetheart cap circumventing deals (more power to them). Then people talk about how shrewd they were to get rid of the likes of Byfuglien, Campbell, etc.
Please.

Identifying their core is just as important... They've definitely been shrewd. Antti Niemi won them a Stanley Cup, and right after, they decided he wasn't their goalie of the future, giving the ball to Corey Crawford with 8 career GP in the NHL the very next year to play 57. They've had plenty of quality guys - Sharp, Leddy, Ladd, Byfuglien, Campbell, Oduya, Frolik, come and go and never got themselves too attached. Compare that to our team, we've been attached to the likes of Matt Stajan and appear to be attached to Kris Russell and Joe Colborne.
Yeah they have a Tier 1 Core but there are a lot of mistakes they could have made every year. Compare to the Kings and their choice to not buy out Mike Richards. Or the Bruins and their inability to identify the value of Boychuk/Hamilton/Seguin. Or the Penguins, seriously the Penguins have the best player in the game, another guy with an argument for the best player in the game, a top 10 defenseman, and a good starting goalie, and yet their team is a perennial early out.

Yeah the Seth jones one was awesome but I'm impatient now for the trade deadline since the flames suck.

This always drives me nuts about our market. Doesn't matter which management regime, or how successful the team is. Too much "I like you and you have guts, kid" management.

A core should be around 5 players or so. The hawks have clearly identified their core, so who would you say is the Flames core. YOu'd have to be ok with trading or letting anyone who isn't part of the core go. Mine would be.
Johnny
Monahan
Bennett
Brodie
Hamilton

Well it has to do with the rumors because everyone seems to get upset when you suggest trading someone because they like the guy or have his jersey or something. Who are the 5 or so guys you'd consider core pieces you wouldn't trade and then see if you'd be willing to trade the guys not on the list. I don't think Backlund is part of the core and I"d be fine trading him. I think a few teams would actually over pay to get him and I don't think the loss of him would really hurt the team that much.
