I suppose it was pretty clear from the start right... I hope that this leads to failure within that organization, but I like Linden which is a terrible feeling to have.

Not that I think players today will care or remember this... but Linden was the key cog in the NHLPA that pushed out Goodenow and led them to accepting the salary cap. That whole thing doesn't look good on Linden as a head guy to be honest (he was firing around money like it was going out of style)

Quote:
The amount of Saskin's salary is among the contentious issues, with some players claiming that Saskin was improperly hired to a five-term contract worth $2.13 million a year. Chris Chelios of the Detroit Red Wings said that Trevor Linden, the union president who plays for Vancouver, improperly negotiated a severance package with Goodenow and the new contract with Saskin. Goodenow received a severance package of more than $8 million, according to e-mail correspondence sent to The Toronto Star, which first reported the controversy this week.

The supplier of that e-mail message and others sent to and from Saskin did not want to be identified because he feared retribution, including legal action.

''What this boils down to is that Trevor, who isn't properly trained to negotiate contracts, took it upon himself to negotiate a package with Bob and a new contract for Ted,'' Chelios said in a telephone interview. ''There was no consulting with player reps whatsoever.

I'm okay with this.

The NHL doesn't need the scum-filled organization that the Canucks have been.

Maybe Linden can help turn the team from a scum-show on ice to a classy, hardworking, no-diving, no-biting, no-complaining HOCKEY TEAM.

I'd love to have a rivalry with a good, classy team. Some great hockey could be had...and well, that will sadly just never happen with the Oilers thanks to their incredible incompetence.

So what does that leave for the gm? More of the fine details and business side i guess? Seems like they got the gm and pres roles reversed.

Pretty big role for Linden, considering his responsibilities. Does he have any experience in any of this stuff, aside from being a former hockey player? Seems to me this is more about his name than it is his abilities to undertake the role effectively. Guess we shall see.

Thus ending an NHL lockout.

Seems like Linden cared about the game, and the fans. If he puts those two aspects at the front of his management style in Vancouver - maybe he'll actually turn that team around. I can't imagine Linden would want to associate himself, and HIS team with the greasy tactics that the Canucks are currently associated with.

I am very conflicted right now.

On one hand, players moving into managerial positions has had some success recently. On the other hand, most of them were eased into roles. But Linden had spent time as an NHLPA executive, which he hopefully learned a lot from (both his mistakes, like gifting Saskin his contract and his successes, like being a driving force behind ending the lock-out). But that was ten years ago now, and what has he done since then? Hock glasses and do voice over cameos for some kid shows.

Team needs an experienced GM or Assistant GM coming in as our GM to balance this and help guide Linden.

It worked out for the fans/owner... but it was a giant blow to the players. Not something you'd brag about on a resume if you were looking for a job negotiating.

I imagine he could/would deligate some of those responsibilities to the GM once he has someone in place.

Getting that sack of crap Bob Goodenow out of hockey was good for everyone involved in the game, Players, fans, owners etc.

Ensuring that they still had multi-million dollar paying jobs? Cause the alternative as not making that money. I doubt you will hear many players complain about the last ten years.

I am conflicted on this too. Linden is one of the few non d-nozzles to come out of that disgusting, filthy, putrid, pathetic organization, and I fear he may actually bring some respectability to it. For him to still want to be associated with this clown show has to be some sort of form of Stockholm Syndrome.

I'm also puzzled by the end result, i.e. the players being forced to accept a salary cap, as some sort of strike against Linden... there was no way that stoppage was ending without a cap.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Linden can do. Maybe he will bring some fresh perspective to the organization.

Whatever happened to Canadian hockey teams? Seemingly most of the best players and even the upcoming young players are in US markets. The management goes from bad to worse(fill in the team you want for each role / multiple answers acceptable). Not making the playoffs hardly unusual. Doing nothing in them if they get there standard fare.

They still rake in the dough but what a sad collection of hockey teams they are.
