For anyone who may have missed a bit of a TNG moment, I have a couple of kind of unique things to share. I played a Heart and Soul piano duet (he started it so I had to go along) with Garrett Wang (Ensign Harry Kim from Voyager) today. I had a practical joke played on me a couple years ago which was shared to Garrett and he came to laugh at / with me. He was incredibly friendly and completely engaged so that was pretty fun.
The reason why I was there was for a charity auction we have been organizing for quite some time with the Comic and Entertainment Expo people and a few other parties. We ended up having the lid of a Roland V-Piano Grand signed by the entire TNG cast yesterday and I will, once I have them all, be able to share some pretty up-close-and-personal shots as each of the cast signed. Then we were as surprised as everyone else when John De Lancie (Q from the series) showed up mid-event at the TNG Exposed evening. We were able to arrange to get his signature on the piano as well today. So I basically got to babysit an object with the 10 signatures of all of the principal cast, all of whom were integral to the first episode, of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The piano will, eventually, be auctioned on ebay (or similar) to a potentially worldwide audience and all in support of the Southern Alberta Make-A-Wish foundation but will be touring a bit first and showing up at some scheduled events including Spock Days in Vulcan. It was fascinating to be a bit "behind the scenes" during the signing and then to walk back through the crowd to our booth area with the Vulcan staff who had a replica bridge console signed for the museum there. We watched a goodish bunch of the "All-cast" line go through and it was really fun to see how completely excited many people were to have met the cast and obtained autographs.
I have the piano for the next few weeks while we look after preservation, appraisal (really tough on that front as it's, in essence, a one-off globally unique object with impeccable authentication and provenance), insurance and some of the placement and event logistics. The numbers that have started to be talked about in relation to ultimate value are becoming pretty impressive and, since it's for charity, I guess the more the merrier. In any case, I'll have some pics, unique access opportunities and other stuff once I get some rest and get some of the data processed.
From my perspective, I think the combination of the add-on of Star Trek history being made (first full-cast assemblage at a public convention event and on the 25th anniversary of the show), all added onto an already growing show tipped this one over the capacity of both the venue and the event-management framework. It was pretty intense.

Funny aside for people on this site:
Left the show around 1:30pm today with the family, and while walking up the main entrance/exit toward the CTrain station, who should approach us but CP's favourite scalper in his Denver Broncos' gear. He asked us if we would sell our passes, so we gave him the two for $20.

We left about the same time, but I saw a couple that wanted to buy tickets but they had stopped selling tickets for the day, so I just gave them our passes. I imagine the scalper easily made money.. all they had to do was find someone similar to the couple I ran into.

@greggbeever just heard that the @Calgaryexpo pre-sales equalled last year's attendance. Event clearly oversold, despite #calgaryexpo claims

To be fair, they also added space from last year, so some ticket sales at the door were probably justified.

And to be more fair, the claim is only true if last year was at capacity as well. If it wasn't, comparing the number of pre-sold tickets to last years attendance and saying this event was oversold is incorrect. They had no idea if last year they could have sold 5000 or more tickets.

Am pretty surprised to see some of the pictures in this thread with regards to how massive the lineup outside actually got today and yesterday.

Yeah, that was us!
We got to play in between some of the panels on Sunday as well. I definitely ambushed Stan Lee back stage for a photo.

And to be even more fair, that just seems to be some dude who was standing in line. Hearing something and then jumping to "clearly oversold" doesn't make it so.

I know the room it is in down there. All someone had to do was ask the Stampede staff for access to it. Even if their was a rental charge for it, they were already rolling in wheel barrows of money, they should have used it.
I rode my bike through the grounds today, and what a shart show. Some neat costumes and stuff. This is the thing though. It would be cool, to actually see a built guy in one of these superhero outfits. Supermans shirt is supposed to show off his man of steel physique, not look like a jean jacket.
|
Holy crap are you ignorant. I was there from the first show where they had 2000 people in the big 4 building. The guy who never 'worked' in his life quit his 6 figure marketing job and put 2 mortgages on his house to start this up.
Yeah just any jack ass off the street can get the entire Next Gen crew to reunite after 18 years. The Official Star Trek convention in Vegas couldn't even pull that off. Or to get Leonard Nimoy's last convention appearance.

I had a great time. Only real trouble was the line-up to get in on Sunday morning. Other than that I walked right through the front door with no hassels. Got almost all the autos I planned on (why is Adam Baldwin so freaking popular?) and having The Million Dollar Man place the Million Dollar Belt on my shoulder made the 10 year old inside me so happy! And when Darth Vader and Captain Picard both give you a birthday wish it's definately a great event.

perhaps this topic was discussed 20 pages ago, but who are some "headline" guests they could bring in the the future - obviously the Star Wars gang is the easy answer - but how about:
- cast from original battlestar galactica
- gil gerrard (buck rodgers)
I can't think of any more right now.

Gil Gerard was there this year. As was Richard Hatch from Battlestar Galactica.

I think it's awesome that there was such a high demand for this event. Hopefully it keeps growing. Calgary needs more cultural events than just the Stampede.
I think organizers will use this year as a learning experience and it will be better organized in the future.
