Had an idea!
|
Gotta think the Flames have to pay to solidify the position.
They have the cap space.

I have to say considering how quiet it’s been on the Hall front that once Markstrom finalizes there is a good chance Hall is next on the list

I believe in the Jays.
|
5 years is about right, and I get that we need to do 6 to get it done, but 7 is just too much.

7 years at 31 y.o. is a big risk on the Flames end.
6 is a rather big leap towards more reasonable.
I said at the outset that I'd expect him to be effective for 4-5.
So I don't blame the team for wanting to shed that extra year.
Not surprised at the delay.

6x6 is fine. Please let this be.

Hell, show me 7 x $5.75M to keep it below 6M. Helps us compete in the next half decade.
...please just finalize this.

If he wants 7, then at least knock the AAV down closer to 5

Remember here, the rumour is Edmonton is willing to do 5 or 5.5 for 7 years.
We have to beat that.

Doesn't mean Demko hasn't taken that next step now but we'll see

This is not an incorrect take.

Both of these would be a bad idea. The 7 year one would be a very bad idea.

I'd rather we sign Crawford to 2 years instead of a 7 year for Markstrom. At this point I rather trade for a goalie than sign Markstrom for that long.

Here is how the numbers I use had Markstrom ranked over various seasons, with the top three in brackets for context. Now, goalies are voodoo and I have very little confidence in mine (or anyone's) ability to forecast their performance with any degree of certainty.
2019-20: 6th (Hellebuyck, Rask, Grubauer)
2018-19: 24th (Gibson, Binnington, Bishop)
2017-18: 19th (Grubauer, Raanta, Bobrovsky)
2018-2020: 17th (Khudobin, Lehner, Binnington)
2017-2020: 17th (Grubauer, Gibson, Khudobin)
Obviously you hope last season is what you are signing up for, but worst case you're getting an over-paid but average starter. Pretty good floor and hope you get the giant ceiling in a couple seasons.
(As an aside, still annoyed the Flames missed out on Khudobin and Grubauer previously, both of whom I had recommended as good-bet signings/trades)
