I think the Flames expected to show up and just win. That doesn't happen in hockey. Hopefully they smarten up tomorrow.

I mean they're missing the defense that made them a good team in the past. Buff, Myers, Trouba, Chiarot.

Time to send dumb penalty Bennett back to the 4th line and bring Ryan back up.

Yeah, but this is why they are not the top team they were. They had to pay Hellybyuk, Connor, Laine, Morrisey, and Ehlers plus reup Wheeler with a raise. That money had to come from somewhere. Even if Buf was healthy, I think his play wouldn't match his salary any more. Really all that building and it was a pretty small window for them. It is tough for a small market Canadian team to have a couple good shots.

Yep, it felt like they just wanted to wait for the Jets to burn themselves out and then takeover.
So much for Gio saying they were too calm before game 2 against Colorado and that they know better this season. From the looks of it they didn't learn a thing.

Same ol story here, die hard fans from all aspects of “fandom” all upset because our beloved team let us down again, we fall for the same optimism year after year putting our trust in the coach/core.
Time to move on from these guys:
#1 - All in for Hall. He becomes our fastest high IQ player with a shoot first mentality.
#2 - Move on from Gio. Love the guy, but he’s lost a step and the covid break didn’t help. Expose for expansion draft, If he's selected good he can come back and retire a flame.
#3 - Trade Johnny for as many high quality assets we can. Address our RHS/RW depth and maybe try and get a C.
#4 - Explore any hockey trade not named Lindholm and Tkachuk, all ears on anyone else.
#5 - Spend the money and get a real coach. Gallant/Boudreau please.

That said, I don't get too down about their struggles either because I just can't; its only hockey after all and if the Flames are my biggest problem I am doing fine, especially this year. Besides all the 2020 stuff that is affecting all of us I have lost a close friend recently, watched another close friend lose his mom to cancer, and am going to lose my own mother any time now.
It's good to care about the Flames, and it sucks when they suck, but it's just a game at the end of it all.

Good perspective. Sometimes we take this too seriously and forget to just ride this ride and enjoy the highs when they come. At least we're on it.
My dad watches all the games but never seems upset by it. His take is always something to the tune of "good thing there's next game", which is really true. There's always another kick at the can, and there's always a chance that it works out next time. Can't get so worked up about what has been and try to take each game as they come, but most importantly remember the possibilities of what might happen next because you just never know. Crazy things happen every year.
Eventually we WILL be the beneficiaries and witness another amazing run, its not a matter of if but when. Until then just enjoy the ride and wear your colors proudly. And when it happens, we'll be happy for sticking it out to see it.

I'm more concerned that Tkachuk famously "arrived" against Colorado Game 1 after being called out a bit by the media for not doing anything previously in the playoffs and then disappeared offensively the rest of the series. Game 1 vs WPG compared to Game 2 felt very similar.
Need to see more killer instinct from most of the team, but Tkachuk is the one guy that absolutely should lead the team in the playoffs.
|
Agreed, it’s time for him to have a multi point game in the playoffs , he’s been due. Hopefully next game, we really need Tkachuk to be a game breaker on offence, if not then it’s gonna be a pretty impossible hill to climb. Right now the play is far too similar to the play of last years playoffs, but I think that should be expected given that this is probably a worse team than last seasons. At least we had Valimaki for a couple games and Hamonic. Watching our defence handle the puck is pretty horrific right now, especially with Gio struggling. I’ve never been a big fan of Hamonics but his loss is glaring to me right now.

But the point I'm making is that this is a relatively weak opponent, made weaker by recent events, and yet the Flames are still playing to their level and below. It's disheartening but expected.

The biggest enemy the flames have is their own mental toughness, they make so many stupid mistakes. The last ducks series was full of comical errors, vs the Avs they made so many turnovers that would turn into odd man rushes leading to the flames being crushed. This last game there were multiple times where I found myself just putting my head in my hands, simple break out passes are a struggle to complete vs a team with a bad defence and without their two best players. It’s ####ing bad right now for this group but they have shown in past regular seasons that there is a high level of skill they can reach. They just all seem to collectively #### the bed in the playoffs. I think we have a talented group but there is tons of mental fragility within the team. This is a must win series cuz a lot of these guys should not be back if they blow it. I’m frankly so ####ing over being the laughing stock in the playoffs, this should be it for a good chunk of this core if they don’t win this damn series.

Lindholm scored and made lots of big hits. Monahan also looks stronger . He made some big hits. He seems to be stronger than ever and wasn't shy about it like years past. Johnny if any thing is the weak link on that top line. Teams have figured him out . Take the body and he will just dump it in . Gaudreau has always tossed the puck like a salad if he sees someone coming or hears those skates chipping ice in his direction. Its a catch 22 moving on from him. Nice contract , dynamic player if GIVEN SPACE. And if he stays he is wasting elias linholms contract. Thats the big thing for me. Elias needs the same crash and bangers to match his game. He can't be the top physical game in game out to be effective. He has so for but thats because he has to crash and bang because Johnny won't and can't. Monahan has been getting better in this regard over the last 3 years but Johnny is the man out on that line for me. I think Johnny going foreward is going to be a 2nd line lw for the rest of his career . Patrick kane is still dangerous because he was pumped down to 2nd line duties . Being on the second line for a player like kane/ gaudreau is where they find the time and space they need to rival what they did early in their careers.

That's quite the hot take!
Looks like a pretty good lineup if we're aiming to be a lottery team.
I think you trade Monahan and Gaudreau long before you play them on the 3rd and 4th lines. At least that way, you get a bump on the rebuild you're clearly excited for.

Couple of things:
- Elias Lindholm is 9th on the team in 5v5 ice time right now, unless he is nursing an injury that is something Ward needs to fix.
- At 5v5 Sam Bennett is leading or tied for the lead among Flames Forwards in Goals, Shots, Individual Corsi, Individual Scoring Chances, and Hits. Will need to validate but think he leads the team in zone entries and zone exits as well.
-Flames need to try to get Gaudreau some time away from tough match ups. They should try to sneak him out with Bennett and Dube on the odd shift, their speed could open up more space for him.
