I saw only the first half of that tweet and almost went crazy.

I agree. I don't understand how they couldn't see this coming the day they signed Tavares. You can argue Marner having this career season is only going to make things that much harder to fit both him and Matthews contracts in with the Tavares deal not even including Nylander. You can argue the Marner camp could be asking for close to $10 million a season and certainly more than Draisaitl. Matthews should be asking for as much or more than Tavares.

Pretty sure Nylander was insurance in case they lost the Tavares sweepstakes.
Now that they have JT, it’s more like, “do you still want to sign with this almighty team for dirt cheap?”

But signing Nylander was (apparently) one of the conditions that Tavares wanted met when he signed.

Maybe he should have taken less money then. Was he expecting Nylander to accept less than market value?

I thought he did take less money to sign with the Leafs? Compared to the other offers.

I feel like whenever these "tidbits" get leaked out its to appease the teams fanbase when they miss out on a player they were rumored to be in on. Or to try and satisfy the fans who think they may have over payed.

Maybe. But the point is that when he signed (and all the insiders have mentioned this at some point) was that Dubas said he would be able to keep everyone together. Is that Tavares' problem to look after? Nope. Thats on Dubas.

Tavares seems to be fitting in really well with Matthews this year, so I don't think Dubas is feeling bad about that signing. He can't cave to Nylander with all the other pending contract issues looming, especially when they don't need his offense anyways.
I hope Nylander gets traded to a team that misses the playoffs, he can hug his paycheque and wonder what it is like to be on a cup contender for the few years. IMO if Toronto trades Nylander for a defender and a pick they are better off.

Man is Eklund dumb these days it is like he doesn’t even watch hockey. First he talks about teams with lack of scoring centers being interested in Puljujarvi because he assumes he is a center not a winger.
Now he mentions teams are trying to get permission to talk to Nylander. No one needs permission he is a free agent a restricted free agent but still able to talk to other teams

I don't think he understands what a condition is then.

He took less money than the San Jose offer and I think the Islanders offer was pretty close to the Leafs but he got money that was ballpark to what he was worth just like when Richards took the Randers deal over the Flames which was a little more. He obviously didn't take a big enough discount or the Leafs would have had this contract inked by now. Maybe this goes down to the last hour and Nylander caves in. For him though he has to know he's likely getting traded in the offseason so I don't see why he would accept less money than what his camp feels is market value seeing he's not long for the Leafs organization so giving them a discount doesn't make a lot of sense.

My choice of word, and I guess a poor one but I think you know what I meant.
On a somewhat related note, anyone else loving Babcock's comments to the media about Nylander? Must be making Dubas cringe.

Yes, Kessel was traded for 2 firsts and a second.
It was a little more than the compensation Boston would have received had Toronto given him the same contract as an RFA offer sheet, but it ensured that Boston wouldn't have the option to match the offer. It also ensured that the Leafs wouldn't need to drastically increase the offer sheet (and compensation) to disincentivize the Bruins from matching an offer sheet.
Based on what Nylander is rumoured to be asking for, a similar trade deal would likely be a first and 2 seconds or possibly 2 firsts.
