The price was high, but Hamonic's age and salary represent tremendous value. And these are likely late picks the Flames are giving up. Still, the loss of that intake of prospects will cause pain down the line. Not in 2 or 3 seasons, but in 5 or 6. Given the age of the core, that was probably a trade-off worth making.

We kind of went through this after acquiring Bouwmeester. They have to actually perform the best as a group or the paper roster doesn't mean a lot. I'm hoping Hamonic is better than he showed last season or this isn't a very good deal for the team. There can be no slow starts like last season as this team is in "win-now" mode and these acquisitions have to pay off now because there's not going to be a robust prospect pool in the upcoming seasons with all these picks that have been shipped out.

Great character player, solid top 4 d-man, compliments Brodie perfectly, still young, great contract.
Fantastic trade.

The constant comparison of loading up the team's defence to the Bouwmeester acquisition of a decade ago is becoming tiresome. The two situations literally have nothing to do with one another. Please stop reflecting on this as some sort of reliable indicator of what we should expect for the Flames current defence core.

I disagree. Especially now with the addition of Valimaki the Flames actually have a very impressive group of young defensive prospects. The current core of forwards is also very young. There will be some transition on the blue line over the next five years, but I think it is reasonable to expect that the team could be highly competitive for a long time.

Of course Mark Spector asks Brad Treliving about the Oilers.
What a tool.

When asked about Stone, Treliving just said "we are still working away".

Hamonic was protected by NYI in the expansion draft. Wouldn't it have made more sense for NYI to trade Hamonic before the expansion draft?

What a great pickup. Last year was a complete aberration for Hamonic and I expect he will rebound in a big way. Between injuries and all the stuff in his personal life, it's almost surprising he didn't completely collapse. Impressive man.
The price is a lot, but the Flames' biggest hole, by far, was a #4 defenceman. With Hamonic, their #4 defenceman is like having a #3 on 25 teams in the league.
After having to watch Wideman, Engelland, Russel, and Stone limp around the ice the last year (poor, poor TJ Brodie), I can't wait to have a competent defenceman who can actually make a decent break out pass or escape pressure on his own. Those four were horrific in the #4 role.
The Flames contender window is open now. Exciting times as a Flames fan.

It would for them but not for us. How would we have protected him?

Calgary wouldn't have wanted him then since it would've forced them into a 8-1 scheme instead of 7-3-1 for expansion.

I think we're at a point where the regular season doesn't mean much. Ducks for example had a slow start last season, but who cares anymore.

The Flames really have to shift to win now mode so that they don't get beat by the McDavid effect in Edmonton. I think this is pushing the Flames to make trades like this for Hamonic - we just gave up a lot of high draft picks for this guy - sort of like a team that thinks its on the verge of greatness with its current line up. Sadly, I don't think that is the current Flames. Too early for this. Overpaid - should of stuffed Treliving in a closet with no means of communication until mid July.

If you're going to move draft picks, this is the way you should do it.

Agreed...
its more about getting hot at the right moments... calgary started poorly, but went on a run that propelled them into the playoffs...
we beat out Nashville for the 7th spot, and lo and behold, they get hot and make it to the SCF...
i'd prefer a strong start of course, but as long as you get into the playoffs, you have a shot...

I've never looked into this,
Are the trade conditions met if he re-sign after July 1st?
Or does that give the pick back to the Flames

I absolutely LOVE the player. Mean and nasty to play against, can skate and can move the puck...everything you want a shutdown guy to be able to do.
Absolutely hate the price however. There is a major void of picks moving forward which means that the Flames are out of currency to address any issues left of which there are more than a couple.
a 1st and 2 2nds for a number 4 defenseman is exorbitant in any scenario but even moreso when there are other needs that have not been solved. This club has to find another source of offense as even before this deal they were pretty good defensively.
Absolutely stoked about having Hamonic patrolling the blueline though....no question that part is awesome.
