Thanks for all the good responses. I am reminded of a time in Barcelona where they confiscated my olive oil but didn't notice the pack of safety razors.

There's some crazy good Black Friday deals on New Leaf's website. Can someone tell me more about New Leaf. What would that flying experience be like? Are you on a 737? Is it no-frills to the extent that I'd just wish I paid a couple hundred more for a ticket on Air Canada or Westjet?

It's a 737 for sure. The only thing included in the price is a personal bag (ie. under the seat) and everything else costs extra. No drinks or food included.

These are all online prices when you book - it's more if you do it at the airport or gate.
Carry-on bag: $31
Checked bag: $26
Seat selection: $10 to $26
Priority Boarding: $10

If you don't get your boarding pass online, it's $10 at the airport. So add up what you think you'll need and see if it's worth it.

FYI, Flair Air operates flights for NewLeaf with a fleet of B737-400's, which are older, and are not the 737NG's that WestJet and Sunwing operate.

It's not that they're bad planes or unsafe, just don't expect a brand spanking new aircraft.

What generally matters more to your comfort is the number of seats in the airplane, given that the 734 is about the same size as WestJet/Sunwing 738.

WestJet - 168 seats
Sunwing - 189 seats
Flair - 156 seats

Even the brand new Sunwing planes are a generally unpleasant experience.

Quick bit of checking, seat pitch the distance from the back of one seat to the back of the next....Westjet between 31-32", flair/newleaf 31", sunwing 29". So flair doesn't look too bad.

Update on allen key gate: I received a response from the Australian office of transport security.

Quote:
Because the list of prohibited items provided in the Instrument is not exhaustive, screening officers can use their judgement to determine whether items carried by passengers meet the description of a class of prohibited item and whether or not the items can be allowed past the screening point.

Allen keys is not specifically mentioned in the Instrument. Final decisions on what can or cannot pass through the passenger screening point is based on the discretion of the screening officer.

It is possible that at different airports, screening authorities may make slightly different decisions regarding prohibited items based on their interpretation of the Instrument. Some screening authorities consider that Allen/hex keys under 6 cm is not considered a prohibited item.

Has the person done any flying/training? If you're in YYC the Calgary Pilot Supply store just north of McKnight and 19th street (not far from the Port'o Call/Museum) would be a decent spot to grab something. They have assorted paraphernalia, souvenirs, study material, headsets, clothing, etc. Their website features most of their inventory as well I think.

Any aspiring pilots flight bag will look extra fashionable with a tag made from an actual aircraft that has been scrapped. May I suggest the Gimli Glider (I have this one)?

I don't know why this is cool, but I love that people get excited about it.

I'm curious what they are doing coming here at this time of year, usually something like this would be Spruce Meadows related.

I hope to see it since a three-holer like the MD-11 is pretty rare around these parts now.

Have they already started flight training? If not, I believe a discovery flight runs around $100.

Yes, please do post when you know more! Coincides with a day off school for my son so we might make a trip up to watch it come in.

I think the most memorable flight of my life will go down as an L-1011 from LAX to OGG. Who would have thought a Delta flight would be memorable for non-horrible reasons?

That plane was the furthest thing from generic as far as airliners go.

On the topic of the gift, it's for someone currently in pilot training.
