Players complain about the media and public scrutiny in Canadian markets when they’re out on public. But social media is the same everywhere. Any professional athlete who reads forums like this - whether they play for the Flames or the Boston Red Sox or the Dallas Cowboys - has to know what they’re likely to see. And it has nothing to do with the Canadian NHL markets.

At the end of the day, we all want the same thing. A successful team. We just have other ideas of how to get there, and I'm more pessimistic than some/most. I still want the best for the franchise, and I'm sick of mediocre, so I won't support it.

There are two ways to respond - you either have a tougher guy to go and send the message (Flames don't have that) or you make them pay with a PP goal or two (Flames did score 2 PP goals, but their PP and overall goal scoring capability is limited).
The problem with the Flames is that there probably isn't a more 'general' team in the NHL at the moment. Not fast, not skilled, not offensive, not defensive, not tough and hard to play against... they have nothing going for themselves right now. You can't point at them and say that they are any one single specific thing. The way you compensate that is by making sure that your team is the most hard working team every night, and we certainly can't even say that right now.
I do think that teams are going to start noticing how weak the Flames are physically, and how weak the PP is, and are going to realize that demoralizing the Flames won't be so difficult. Maybe I am over-reacting. I guess we will see.

Kane is a loser of the highest order but I hate to say, I chuckled at his mic'ed up moment in that scrum. It was sadly very much on point.

And I don't think anyone has a problem with that.
It's the taking a lap and calling out hockey fans for being more optimist and hopeful than yourself that was a bit much.

If you can get crapped on for being overly negative, you should expect to get crapped on for being overly positive. Personally I've been dumped on for calling out the Markstrom, Kadri and Neal contracts, and others shouldn't be surprised at getting dumped on for being overly optimistic about those kinds of moves. For some reason the forum is heavily in favour of blind optimism, but I enjoy the people who call out their poor relationship with reality.

True. The difference is that, in hockey (unlike the other sports), there are two different markets, and one of the markets has insane fans, no privacy, and cold weather, while the other has anonymity.
Are there stupid fans everywhere? Of course. Is it a similar experience in Vancouver, vs Seattle (for example)? They're not even in the same universe.

How is anyone still optimistic. Serious question.

I actually don't think we have different ideas on how to get there.
If you boil it down, you and I agree about a lot of that.
I'm firmly of the belief that this organization needs to re-build, and that re-build needs to be a committed one (5-8 years minimum).
And I think that only happens if they get dragged into it (which may be playing out in reality).
This has been a poorly run organization for decades and they should be questioning why that is, and asking what needs to change about that.

Apart from a few exceptions I honestly don't see a lot of examples of blind optimism.
In fact this has been a pretty pessimistic place for the last couple of years.

Tough to have it now after another particularly bad start washed away much of what was built up over the summer.
But his comment wasn’t about now, it was about someone coming in and ridiculing people for being optimist before and telling them to “eat it.”
Though, since it’s always worth finding reason for optimism, this bad start leading to forced, wide-scale roster changes and hopefully a full rebuild is definitely one.

That was, awful. Pretty much what I expected. Two terrible teams that lack any sort of identity. Oilers only go as far as McDavid can cary them and the Flames are just a complete mess. Spurts of decent hockey but neither team can actually make plays or complete a crisp pass. It is actually pretty sad. A complete lack of intense hockey.
I genuinely feel bad for Conroy. Not sure what you can do with this team if Kadri and Huberdeau continue to suck and be the highest paid players.

And I think our resident optimist gets raked over the coals on a daily basis, doesn't he?
Or do you have a bigger hit list?

Not sure I said anyone is still optimistic.
Dunking on those that had more hope than you coming into the season is a little tired though, don't you think?

Things can change quickly, and we don't ever know the future. We can guess, and in this case it may be hard to currently see anything good down the road, but tomorrow is a new day. Maybe they clean house next week? Maybe the team really does turn it around? Perhaps not the likeliest of outcomes, but just because something is improbable doesn't make it impossible. If anybody wanted to hope for a positive turn, they shouldn't be admonished.
I'm not saying someone should be optimistic based on the current state of the team, but there are always reasons to be that aren't totally foolish.

Who's that? I don't have a list, and rarely reply these days, but maybe I need to work harder and crush what little positivity remains.

He was literally bragging about saying the Flames previous core wouldn't win a championship and being "right"
3 years on, pretty ridiculous
I pointed out he also said that core wouldn't make the playoffs or beat Dallas. I mean its not much of a way to be a fan.
I could say the Flames won't win a cup in the next 20 years and I would probably be right...seems like an odd way to be a fan of a team though IMO.
People talk #### about my positivity every day, like I care...I feel bad for people that let a kids game ruin their lives. If the Flames suck all year then I look forward to the new draft picks. If they have a miraculous turn around that would be fun. Whatever...I have real actual issues in my life, being constantly negative about a kids game seems silly to me.
Shame away, I've heard worse
even after last nights debacle I am laughing at the notion the Oilers think they fixed their 3rd period scoring woes because a terrible shot bounced off an icy football field 5 feet into the air and into the top corner. Cup contenders have 2 wins in November, wow good for them.
