Who on earth would pay Ramo $4.0 m? I would certainly agree that he would be a terrible option at that cost, but he did win 17 games last year, and by all counts was a terrific team player.
The Flames did this season. Or pretty close anyway. Sure he could take a paycut but I'd rather just move on like they should have last summer.
Ramo's salary last year was higher than Elliott's by 1.1m
Treliving is just asking for trouble doing this again with Ortio still in the fold. Remember that Ramo was on waivers after just 3 starts last season.
I don't think Ramo will get any offer for more than $2.0, and I don't think he would be much of a threat to displace Gillies. I could see him starting on the bench in Stockton, and as a possible call up depending on what happens with the Flames.

He was the Flames best goalie by a considerable margin last year. I don't see how it was at all a mistake to have signed him last summer. An Ortio/Hiller combination would have been much worse than the league worst goaltending the Flames suffered through last year.

In the end I'd probably be ok with Ramo backing up, but I would have some reservations about it.
I would worry that we'd get into another tandem situation. I wouldn't want Ramo playing more than 10-15 games and would want a clear understanding that he's the backup goalie at $750k-$1M. He'd then have to choose between that option and going to Europe next season. If we're going for a tandem I'd rather we go with a different FA goalie or trade for another one.
Also, he's recovering from a serious injury and may not even be ready for camp so there's some real uncertainty there.
I'd much prefer Ortio and all signs point to him. Still has a lot of upside potential IMO. If the Flames feel that Ortio is done with the organization and won't be an NHLer, then Ramo could be an option to backup if he comes cheap.

Ramo would want $3+ million per year or he would just go back to the KHL. Plus with his serious injury, I don't think he makes sense for the backup spot.
What going on with Chad Johnson? He had pretty good numbers with the Sabres last season.

The Flames goaltending overall wasn't very good for the majority of last season so that's not saying much. I still think had he not been re-signed Hiller would not have had such a horrible season as he did. I still would have wanted the Flames to upgrade this summer though.
#1 - We have a starter who was acquired due to showing he's good enough to be a starter but not being given the opportunity. Give him the clear opportunity, don't give him the pressure of a tandem with an experienced NHL goalie who has been a starter-tandem goalie recently.
Also, that keeps the back up spot open to start seasoning our goalie prospects. Let Ortio start with it, but don't be afraid to give Gillies some experience if he earns it.
2. We're shaping up to be a tight cap team, and hopefully a contender because of it. Things are going to be super tight and a $6mil+ Elliot could lose us a really good player to stay under the cap. If I was a gambling man I'd say we're shaping up for a really good season and wouldn't be surprised to see Elliot jump into the top ten goalie conversation.
If I'm the Flames I'm working hard on a reasonable extension this summer. Obviously Elliot's camp will likely be thinking the same things's as the team, but maybe they'll be happy with the situation and the security of a home with a starter role. Maybe we can get him signed for at least a couple years at $3-$4mil.
I just really think if we "see how things play out" and then talk contract next of season, we'll be looking at a $6mil+ contract. Which if course menas things are going well for the team, but it will likely cost us a piece.

This is a good point that I haven't really thought of. If that is the case—as it seems likely to be—then I would expect he will end up back in Russia next year. However, with the instability of the Ruble right now he might be more motivated to stay in NA even if he has to leave money on the table. He is not from Russia, so I don't see there being any nostalgic reasons to push him back there.

To be clear here, I do not see Ramo as a "third goaltender," but even so, the biggest problem for the Flames last year was not having a solid #1 goalie, and three marginal options to play a full season of hockey. The situation going in this year would be totally different, and my preference would be to see Ortio starting in the NHL, but with Ramo in Stockton as insurance: If Elliot is hurt, or if Ortio has another very poor start a goalie like Ramo can come in in a pinch to be the #2 in Calgary. Or, he could be the replacement #1 in Stockton if Gillies gets a chance to play some games in Calgary.
I don't think the Flames need a backup goalie. Ortio should be given every consideration to take that job. What the Flames need is a goalie who they can shuttle around and fill holes for injuries or underperformance when they are likely to arise. It will be very difficult to find a UFA goalie to play that sort of a role, but with Ramo recovering from injury and in a situation in which he has something to prove I could see him as a good option to fill this position.

Dollars-wise, he's earned more than we're able to pay him next season. Ramo deserves a ~2.7 million dollar contract - he is a legitimate 1B goaltender.
He's worth what the market dictates he's worth. Can you honestly see a team signing him to $2.7m coming off a huge injury and a very inconsistent season? Personally, I think he'll be lucky to get a PTO after he recovers from his injury and maybe $1m for one season if he can come in a show the injury hasn't affected his ability. He's already behind the eight ball because he won't be ready for training camp. His best chance is if another starter goes down with an injury right as he gets cleared. Barring that, there's a really good chance he doesn't play in the NHL at all next year, and maybe never again for that matter.
With regards to an extension, what's the best way to go about it? If you do it now you'll likely be able to get it at a lower number, maybe in the 4-5 million range. If you wait and he has stats similar to the last few years, all of a sudden you're going to need to pay him the 6.5+ that Bishop wanted anyways. This extension will be very very important.

I'm actually really excited after letting it sink in and going over his career and situation. I think Brad made the right trade and I honestly don't think this was even an option without Elliot respectfully requesting to move on from the tandem situation.
He's a clear starter who just had a huge hand in helping knock out the Hawks in the playoffs.

Yeah, I think you got to try this summer. Burke was just being Burke with his "there's a possibility of an extension".
If there's any coolness to signing an extension this summer it will be from Elliot's camp. The Flames should, and likely are all in to try and get a reasonable extension signed this off season.
He's almost assuredly going to have a good season and if things start to come together for the Flames, we're easily looking at $6+, maybe even $7+ if he has a stellar season.
As fans, we should be dreaming of an extension this summer, imo. This is not a "wait and see" situation, or we'll likely be waiting and seeing which core piece moves on to make room at a later date.

Whatever we as fans think an extension is going to amount to, wait. It will be less. Brad Treliving is the GM. How many Chicken Little scenarios must he avert before people #trusttheprocess ?

No way he gets $6m, much less $7m IMO. Maybe if he's a Vezina finalist but even then, the Flames have all the leverage. He's finally nailed down a starting job in the NHL at 31, I think he's going to be reasonable. It's not like there is a huge market for starting goalies out there anyway, and I'm sure Elliott and his agent are well aware of that.
If they signed him today, I would be disappointed at anything over 5 years and $4.5m AAV. He looks good, and I'm excited about him, but they can't get carried away and I don't think they will. I think something gets done this summer. Both the team and the player will be looking for stability and will both be motivated to get it worked out. Elliott isn't getting younger, I doubt he's going to risk future earnings in case this season doesn't go well for whatever reason.
