I found out about a program called MSI Afterburner, which primarily is used for monitoring and/or overclocking video cards but also has the built-in ability to record game video and audio. It's not specific to just MSI cards either - it works for vid cards from any manufacturer and either NVidea or ATI chipsets.

During the game I didn't have very much lag at all, which is a common complaint for Fraps. The downside of MSI Afterburner is it doesn't record a single window but the entire desktop. It also won't record Minecraft if it's run in full-screen mode. I can't remember the reason why - either it was something to do with not working with native 64-bit applications (my java install is 64-bit) or only working with Direct3d and/or OpenG/L. Whatever, when I tried it I got all the audio but just black screen for video. As a result I maximized my Minecraft window to 1920 x 1080, and in the video the only bit of my desktop you see is the taskbar and Minecraft window frame.

On my previous WinXP computer I used a program called Gregion 3.1 Again it's a free download but there's not the support community you get with better-known programs. I found it worked okay and was light on resources (didn't cause lag, etc), but was buggy in some areas. I had to start Gregion before Minecraft (or was it the other way around?) before it would record properly. Once I figured out the process it worked fine.

No matter which program I've tried, here is the most important thing I've learned: work backwards! First find out what YouTube wants for file formats, size, quality, and Second look at what video editing software can produce what YouTube wants (I use Windows Live Movie Maker), and then Third set up your video capture software to produce what the video editing software can work with.

Sorry about the novel, but I hope this helps you out.

EDIT: Just found out while reviewing the video that all audio dropped out after 20 minutes. Sux! I'll have to do more testing with MSI Afterburner to see if this is a consistent problem, I guess.
Thanks for this, I'll be sure to try some of these out.

I know on my old computer I just used hypercam, it worked pretty well.

Sucks about the audio dropping out though. Does anyone still plan to upload their videos?

I do, but I have to sync up the sound still since I recorded the audio with my phone.

Haven't gotten around to it myself, Been thinking on what to do since I learned all but the first 20 minutes are without audio, and guess I'll try YouTube annotations.

I recorded a couple of hours of minecraft last night just to see if the audio drops again, and unfortunately it did after 6 minutes. Man, I want to like MSI Afterburner, but no good if this keeps happening.

I finally finished putting together my video for Season 5!

Make sure annotations are turned on, as they become important later on in the video

Appreciate you uploading this, always cool seeing other peoples perspectives.

Man I looked stupid at the end there, but I had to put my render distance on tiny or else I would probably freeze in the middle of a fight.

We need to do another one of these sometime. A big, well-planned one.

Agreed! Or perhaps a night of ClusterChunk, Nail, or Race for Wool, except these take a level of skill that a lot of us perhaps don't have.

I certainly would be willing, but to do it I would need to update the server to support 1.3.2, assuming the plugin we were using also was updated.

There is also the additional problem of my wife commandering my rack location in the basement, but should be resolved with a few hours of basement reorg.

Really, if we want to do anything massive or at all complex as far as map, or rules go, I would be hard pressed to find a lot of additional time to do that, but would welcome anyone who wanted to take on that task.

Rathji, do you know what kind of upload speed is recommended to run a Minecraft server?

Shaw will probably build out to my work location soon, and I would consider hosting a server out of that location if there would be no impact on store ops. I have a large rack in a nice air-conditioned space, all ready to go!

I have 3Mbs up and there seem to be zero issues hosting up to 10 people that we have had for out UHC stuffThere are sites out there that list some more concrete number.

IMHO 250kbs Upload is lots for one person.

If you need hardware to run it, I think I might have one that is destined for the recyclers. Let me know and I can see if it is spoken for.

I'm up for it. My friend could also probably play again, although he's pretty bad. (built a house in ultra hardcore)

Now that I think about this, it was kind of dumb of me to revive this idea right before being unavailable for 2 weeks. Although to be honest, it might take that long to find a date that works for 8+ of us and get teams, a map and a server worked out.

Just an update, got the server relocated in its original spot. If I get a chance tonight I will see about getting Minecraft updated tonight, otherwise it will need to wait until midweek.

Hardware shouldn't be a problem. This is all pie-in-the-sky anyway, until such time as I can get Shaw into the building. Currently I have 6 down, 1 up through Telus, and it's barely enough to run the location, let alone add in a server.

I have been sick this week and just getting caught up with work now, so the updating the server is not complete yet.

I will see if I can put some time in over the weekend, but wouldn't be able to be sure when I would be finished.
