I'm one of the fans that was pretty down on this franchise the last couple of years. They were such a disappointing team to be a fan of.
But the way they've started this season going 7-1-3 and looking dominant doing it most of the time, I can't imagine digging up things to bitch about at the moment. I just hope they keep it going and don't fizzle out.

Markstrom is playing extremely well AND is in a situation where he has a light workload:
His workload has been so light, in fact that he's dropped well out of the top-10 in goals saved above expected since Halloween, despite posting that shutout against the Rags.
What, then to make of Markstrom (and the Flames') success? In a nutshell: we're kicking hellacious ass.
5v5 Expected Goals For vs. Against - November 7
5v5 Shot Attempts for vs. Against - November 7
5v5 Goals For vs. Goals Against - November 7

What does "Everything is Happening" mean in this context?

^ High event hockey on both sides (consider the context of which data set)
Also the third and fourth charts do not reflect goaltending results, they reflect the situation the goalie is put in

I did my own work here.
If you take out overtime - Markstrom adds an extra quality start (Anaheim - save percentage from 889 to 917 - 912 average)

In other words, one shot, 3 on 3, has meaningful impact on the stat in question. In other words, tiny sample size.
GranteedEv is trying to defend their original position, and searched for - and found - a stat that supports their argument. Or more precisely, they believe supports their argument.
But pretty much every other stat says differently.
Stats are great when used properly, but shouldn't be cherry-picked to fit a narrative.

I was one of those guys too.
But somehow this feels different. It would be one thing to say they've recaptured the magic of the first half of the first year with Bill Peters (let's not even talk about the second half of that year or any of the folowing years).
I think more importantly, they just look more mature -- they're starting out-front this year and legitimately dominating teams instead of finding a way to eek out points. They look comfortable in tight games and not so easily rattled. And the biggest ace up their sleeves this year is Sutter -- I have the utmost confidence that he won't let things slip too far when the games matter in the back-half of the schedule. He's got the team focused on the prize that matters, not regular season accolades.
They might dip a bit, and who knows how they'll hold up against legic star power in the playoffs, but I think these guys are for real.

I will say Markstrom has awful OT stats this year. 3 goals against, 2 saves.

There is no defending his OT record so far this year. Small sample size, but off to a terrible start.
I look at it like shooting percentage - it will normalize.

^
Is there available data about League shot/save averages for goalies in OT? I am interested to know just how bad Markstrom has been.

I suspect the shot amount versus quality differential makes that stat pretty unenlightening. I could imagine one shot which was a breakaway going in versus 5 which were an initial shot plus a bunch of banging short side which were all saves. And there’s few enough OTs to skew everything.

Markstrom sure would have been a nice late pickup in the pool. Shutout machine.

I don't know if it has been pointed out before, but the only goalies with more than one shutout are either named Ilya or some form of Jack/Jake/Jacob.
