Disagree. I think it is stupid for a non-playoff team to be tossing around assets for an upcoming draft to go after a player that is going to be available for free come July 1st. There are NOT going to be big numbers of teams lining up to grab Reimer. Don't give up assets unless you are getting something to build around.

Ya no point chucking a draft pick away. Plus it's pretty clear the team is going to suck this year. No point throwing a new goalie to the wolves and or decreasing our draft position.

Well, if stupid is to explore all options, then I can live with that. I believe the opposite, it's stupid to limit yourself and hamstring your ability to make the best acquisition possible.

So you would really trade a 3rd round pick for a soon to be UFA, knowing full well the market for the player is extremely limited?

No, I'm saying you make a trade if the right one presents itself. And, if you were to make such a trade for a UFA, you know full well they'll get permission to talk extension before pulling the trigger.
It's not the first time that'll happen and it won't certainly be the last. Again, why compete with the few teams that will vie for a players services if the cost to sign and trade a player is a 3rd round pick in a weak draft. Guarantee you get the guy you want.
Like I said, explore all your options.

Right now on TSN's Leafs intermission, Ferraro was asked about best fits for trade bait players and has Russell paired with Dallas. "Dallas needs defencemen, they need mobility, they need somebody to get the puck up the ice and he's a tough defender".
Hudler with New Jersey "how about a buy for the most surprising team in the NHL".
Just for fun basically, but there you go.

And you only do that if there is a high caliber player about to hit free agency. When was the last time that a non-playoff team traded for a player like that at the trade deadline? Has it ever happened? Those deals happen a week or less before free agency hits, not at the deadline.

Don't wear out your keyboard, and listen.
1. Calm the heck down. Chill.
2. I said a conditional 3rd. The condition would be if Reimer doesn't re-sign, we keep the pick. Something along those lines.
3. My head is located on top of my neck

Dallas makes sense for Russell, as do the Rangers I think sounds like McDonaugh is out again.
NJD for Hudler? Whats good there?

New Jersey is Colorado East. Both fringe playoff teams, both surprises, both have a ton of former Flames, and both clubs had terrible years last year.

Why? Why would you even think about that deal? Is Reimer a star player that is going to make a difference to the team long term that would make you want to give up a quality draft pick? Do you believe that there is going to be a bidding war to get Reimer signed? Do you believe that there are going to be a number of teams that are going to be in a rush to sign Reimer? The only reason you give up a pick for a soon to be UFA is if you believe the player in question can make a huge difference to your team, is going to be a core player, and believe that if he hit the open market that you risk losing him in a bidding war. Do you believe that Reimer is the top goaltender available in free agency and is a guy that is going to make the Flames better in the long term? I just don't see James Reimer being an answer to any question for the Calgary Flames, not to the point that would require them to cough up assets to get him.

I wonder if the Rangers would move Hayes? A young big body RW who's having a down year and has been in the coach's dog house a bit this season. Plus, he has the history with Johnny, which might spark him a bit.

If you want to continue to ignore my post, go right ahead.
For the third time, we'd get Reimer for a CONDITIONAL third-rounder. CONDITIONAL! If Reim leaves, we'd either be giving up a seventh, or nothing!

You're giving up an asset for nothing. That is the point. Horrible asset management.

Teams do it all the time. The Flames gave up assets for Bouwmeester and Wideman only days before they were to become UFA. What's the matter with doing it a few months before UFA?
And these are all hypotheticals. That means that they don't actually mean anything. The Scorpion doesn't have the authority to make real trades.
