Same here.
Not really rocket science that there are huge lines and not enough cashiers, but you have employees walking around picking their butts. I mostly shop at the N.E Wal-Mart so I can't speak about the other ones, but it is the most horribly run store I have ever shopped at.

Nooooooooo! I love self checkouts! I get annoyed when stores don't have them in service (they're installed, but not open) and force you to use the cashier.

The self checkouts in safeway at North Hill always work. That is such a good safeway imho. The one in Bowness is really good also.

Walmart got rid of them because they saw a massive increase in "loss". I still see them at Co-Op, Home Depot, and Safeway.

I go through the self checkouts with my wads of change. You know, that bedside jar or drawer filled with 2 pounds of coin. Yup, I'm that guy. No more rolling penny's or dimes for me! That's for chumps!

IMO Self checkouts at stores, self checkins at the airport, automated operator bia$$h with cell providers are all a big pain in the a$$.
I consider myself technically savvy but nearly half the time I attempt to use these "modern conveniences" I wind up either getting ticked off, or having to get assistance from a real person.
What is wrong with hiring real people to deal with people? Especially the outfits that are using these things. These big corperations are not going to go under for the sake of slightly increased payroll.

Yeah, we shouldn't look for efficiencies that allow people to work on other things. While we're at it, we should create jobs by going from cars to rickshaws, doing our laundry by hand, and removing the robots from our car factories. Think how awesome our quality of life would be!
Personally, I like self-checkout, although I understand they suck to cash out so the ones I use tend to close early.

I was in the Northland Walmart about 2 years ago, and saw one the funniest things in my entire life.
Some mid fifties guy in a really bad suit was using the self checkout, and it kept asking him to select his mehtod of payment. And each time he pushed the screen, he would push it a little harder, but it wouldn't register. First a polite finger touch. Then the two finger tap. Then the four finger push. And it finally culminated in a full blown falcon punch that busted the screen and bent the frikkin monitor mount. The dude just drops a couple f-bombs and leaves his crap on the scale and walks out.
The women were horrified, and every guy in line was dying of laughter.

A few years ago I was down in California and went through a self checkout that was pre-selected to Spanish, which I tried to soldier through. When I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do next and asked the attendant for help, she gave me a strange look when I told her I had no idea what it was asking me to do next.
Wal-Mart got rid of their self-checkouts because shoplifting increased dramatically when they brought them in. They also got rid of their 24 hour stores because homeless guys were napping in the luggage department after getting kicked off the C-Train at Shawnessy when the trains stopped running.

Damn criminals and homeless ruin the good stuff for everybody! I miss the self-checkouts and 24 hour stores.
I always have urges to buy wierd crap that I don't want the cashier seeing @ 3 in the morning
I can totally see why shoplifting would increase dramatically with how bad the scales and supervision of the checkouts are. One time I bought a box of Coke and put it on the scale and it didn't register the weights of any of the other lighter items at all.

Except efficiencies only work when it's more efficient for the customer. Self-checkouts are slower than a regular cashier because each item has to be weighed individually.

I love self-checkouts. The only frustration I have is that the shelf is too small. I used to be a cashier and am as fast on self-checkout as any cashier is. I wish I had more space to put my stuff and it frustrates me when I need to push the "Remove Item" button every time I take one of the bags off of the shelf.

I love self checkouts - except the ones they have at the Market Co-Op. Those U-Scan units are f'ing awful. Looks like it's running some bloody awful Windows implementation that can't scan faster then one item every 20 seconds - and if you brought your own bags you need the attendant to clear the screen every time you want to put a new bag down.
I have no issues with self-checkouts replacing people. It's a menial job - the people who get replaced can go find a far better job that actually uses their neurons.

The reason Walmarts pulling them is theft was to high. I think they expected losses, but not at the level at which it is happening. I bet it is cheaper and more efficient to have human checkouts than the automated ones.
