It's the problem with education in today's society though, that's for sure. The western system of education creates social outcasts and people who desire above all else to be liked or feared, leading to bullying. Buddy was probably trying to be cool. Absolutely horrific, but that's probably what happened.
As for the people who think someone should have intervened... What exactly did you want them to do? Go and pull the kid off the girl? How do you think that's going to turn out?

The thing that really disgusts me is that that the perpetrater and the spectators to this sickening act will probably just get slaps on the wrists because they're underage. The victim will now have to live with this mental anguish for the rest of her life while the offenders get away basically scott free.

What the offender and others need is a t-shirt made just for them, which they have to wear at school.
"Youth Rape Offender" the discrimination they receive from there on will be justified and maybe a small lesson.

Fight, couple of broken noses instead of of a girl being scared for life? You gotta be kidding me if you don't think someone should've intervened.

A big guy with a baseball bat comes barrelling towards these punks and I bet they all scatter. Although the penchant for youth to carry knives these days, you make a good point.

Who gives a crap, you have to do something. Its funny because usually there are lots of weapons around and on yourself.
But you have to try, to stand around and take pictures is an unbelievable act of cowardice and I hope that this haunts their nights and ruins their lives.

If this is me, I sneak out with a bat so they don't see me coming. I don't want little f***s like this running away... I want to hit each and every one of them square in the throat, then square in the balls.
Edit: We should all note as well here that it is not substantiated yet that the girl was raped- it looks likely but is not confirmed.
I pray that these punks were simply fooling around and it didnt get as out of hand as it appears.

This is actually a good measure of social collapse. When people do not engage in the very basic measure of community solidarity, that is, the protection of the weaker members of a community, one could honestly say that there is something that the society is not doing right. This is a measure of the implicit nihilism of our society. Why did no one intervene? Because they have no higher principle than themselves. All the narcissists could do is film the situation on their cell phones for goodness sake and I guarantee that none of them was doing it with the intention of showing it to the police.
As to your final comment, rapists have a very high reward, low risk mentality. It normally does not take much to scare one off. As there was a group of children watching, the capacity for intervention was high and the risk of confrontation was fairly low.

A guy was walking his dog past the scene and said he had no idea what was happening. Looked to him like a group of kids just messing around. He went on to say that if he had any idea of what was going on, he would have been over there in a second. So is society saved?

Interesting to look at the generational difference, eh? After all, the children are our future.

Sounds to me like you are painting with a fairly wide brush here.

Of course I am painting with a large brush. I am still perplexed as to how no one else here seems to think that this incident has a larger social context. It's bizarre, really.

You are assuming the bystanders and the attacker(s) were not "together". For all we know, and if I were to hazard a guess, this could be some sort of gang bullying/revenge because the victim crossed this group in some way. Similar to the BC murder years ago.

Not even high school, but junior high is not a measure of society. Does anyone here feel like real life is much like junior high? Do you still pick on the nerd in the office? Or if you are the nerd in the office, do you often get picked on by the cool people you work with?
As to my final comment that's my point... intervene and they do one of two things; fight back or scatter. Because they were so young, fighting back is unlikely (unless they're a gang), which leaves scattering. Who knows what happens at that point.
And you're wrong. Someone did intervene and called the police to deal with the situation. Honestly, that's what I would have done in order to ensure that justice is served to ALL who took part in this crime. It wouldn't be out of a sense of nihilism...
I have read/heard the accounts of three adults who witnessed the event. Two were females and one was a father with his young daughter out for a walk. None of these people I expect to interfere except call the police. Yes the field is surrounded but that doesn't mean there were people in every house or that people in every house heard or saw what happened.

Teach them well and let them lead the way? Show them all the beauty they possess inside? ok Whitney Houston - you're making this forum smell like cheese.

That's twice you've said bizarre in this thread, like you're saying you would have ridden in on a white horse and saved the day, and that's the only thing that would not have been bizarre.
Do you mean I'm apologizing for the inaction of the 8 youth who were watching? No. I don't consider them bystanders, I consider them accomplices.
Am I apologizing for the adults who did not come charging in with baseball bats to save the day? No. I shouldn't have to. They did what they were comfortable with and the end result is that the police were involved and the perpetrator(s) will be dealt with.

... and a little girl was violently assaulted. That's my problem.
It's honestly nihilistic that a bunch of kids would stand around and let something like this happen. What's worse is that they took pictures of it, probably for their own self-amusement.
This is a serious and horrifying incident. One cannot help but reflect on the conditions that led to it.

This was one of my first assumptions when I read the article. I am still perplexed as to how peter12 seems to think that this is unlikely. It's bizarre, really.
