It also might pay (depending how long/complicated your trip is) to consider looking at intra-European flights. Some of the low cost carriers are borderline free, and sometimes the full service carriers price-match them. I've looked at a rail pass for a couple of trips, but always ended up flying because I wouldn't use the pass enough to make it cheaper.

Might not be the case for you, but its worth checking.
