Nintendo has found the perfect wedge for girlfriends/wives with the second player. My wife is normally pretty averse to playing video games but she was drawn into the colourful graphics, great music and of course, all of the creativity.
I offered that she take up the second controller and fool around knowing it was "two-player." What Nintendo did was make the second player much more influential in the game while providing literally no ways for them to make the game worse for the primary player. She grabs me 1-Ups, coins, kills enemies for me. She loves it. I have never seen her this into a video game. You know when that's the case Nintendo has made a winner.
