Definitely one of my current fav's and one that most haven't seen as it's buried on AMC.
For sure worth a watch.

AMC has the two best shows on TV right now with Breaking Bad and Mad Men.

What is The Wire about? Is it like CSI where each episode is seperate, or is it like 24 where one season (or the entire series) is strung as one event?

Dexter is great. Watch it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I watched about 3/4 of true blood before I just stopped. I didn't really enjoy it and thought it was really weird. Vampires really aren't my thing.
You'll probably like Entourage.. if you're a guy. It's raunchy, and has hot girls... all you need
Weeds is one I'm watching right now and I finished the second season and onto the second and is so far pretty good. But I think Dexter is still the best.
Modern Family is another decent show. Pretty enjoyable.
House is probably a given, there's not many people I know that don't watch it.
The Wire isn't bad, takes a little bit to get into it and figure out who's who.
Rome was pretty good, I only watched the first and 3/4 of the second. It got a little boring after a while but not bad.
The shows I hear really good things about and want to get into are the Sopranos and Breaking Bad. Also Six Feet Under.

I don't want to say that it's like 24, but each major storyline is a season long. There's some carryover from season to season as well, but there aren't any big cliffhangers at the ends of the seasons. It's by far the best show that I've ever seen, but it takes about 3 or 4 episodes to really get into the show, and to a lesser extent, each season. So if you aren't going to be patient with it, I wouldn't bother starting it. I had to talk my wife into watching the first episode or two several different times over a 2 year period before she ever made it to the third episode, but once she did, she watched all 5 seasons in a month.
And I can't recommend Treme because I haven't seen it yet, but just a reminder for any fans of The Wire, it's written by David Simon and premiers on Sunday.

Shows
Dexter: Like mentioned before, its not perfect, but Michael C. Hall is brilliant, and he keeps me hooked on the show.
True Blood: Loved the first season, second got a bit excessive with the Marianne story line, I have high hopes for the third season though, I think I love the show for the scenery and music more than anything.
Modern Family: Hilarious, I love all the story lines in this show, great one liners and just really fresh comedy.
Community: I think I watch this mostly for Chevy Chase, but its quite entertaining.

Weeds was really good in season 1. It got a little crazy in subsequent seasons but I still watch it from time to time when I see a new episode on.

Start at the first season and go through them all. They're worth the watch, and the show would make a heap more sense than just jumping in the middle.

The 4 best:
Dexter
Trueblood
Madmen
Breaking Bad
as per the quote above, Breaking Bad is by far the best of the four, IMO. It's on every Sunday 8:00pm, on AMC, channel 47 on Shaw.

i tried to get into this show but it just moved so slow. seemed like half of the first few episodes were just long scenes of nothing, just showing the main character in deep reflection or something. felt the same way about Six Feet Under, i could appreciate the acting and storylines, but it just moved so friggen slow i couldn't push myself to watch it anymore

Wow wow wow you HAVE to push through those first few episodes if the show felt slow to you.
Breaking bad has some pretty wicked action.

This.
Breaking Bad is a cannot miss show, you have to watch from the series premiere though or alot of the details will be lost on you. As far as others, comedy wise, Always Sunny in Philly is the best hands down IMO. Drama wise - Brotherhood was a show I really enjoyed. It played on Showtime for 3 seasons, ended last year i think - picture West Wing meets Soprano's - very good show. Oz is a classic you have to see from front to back. And to anwser to OP's question, yes Dexter is a much watch, I certainly would not watch the other one though.

Everyone sees things differently, of that there is no debate, but I certainly cannot understand anyone finding Breaking Bad to be "slow".
In my oppinion, the cleverly interlaced humour along with the amazing acting of Bryan Cranston (among others) make even the "slower" parts of the show very enjoyable. Cranston absolutley kills in this role.

I'll try and get some comedies next.

I will throw my vote out for the HBO show "Sons of Anarchy".
It's basically about a biker gang in small town California. Lots of shooting, girls and profanity. Don't want to go into too much detail, but check it out.

under appreciated current comedy....PSYCH. Don't take it too serioulsy and you'll laugh your ass off for an entire hour.
Although, you may have had to grow up in the '80s to appreciate many of the references.
