Ankle injuries suck pp and never go back to 100%. I busted mine about 3 years ago, and although the bones healed up nice, the ligaments never fully recover. I have broken pretty much everything, and the ankle is the one that just won't go away. It is however the most complex joint in your body, an to add to that the amount of weight it absorbs just amplifies any issues. Get used to it I guess is all I can say.

Purely out of curiosity, too: Why the heck do your toes bruise when you injure your ankle?!

I re-injure my ankle almost after every physical activity I do. It hurts like a bitch for about 3 days and then goes back to normal untill I do something on it again. Lately after playing hockey I've woken up early in the morning (around 5) with it swelling and it hurting like never before to the point of actually thinking I broke it. It seems to get better as the day goes on, but hurts especially in the mornings.

If I'm not mistaken it's just internal bleeding, it is normal to spread and is a typical sign of ligament tear within your foot. When I messed mine up my whole foot and lower calf (tore the calf) went purple and black, you seriously think your foot died. It does go away though but like any bruising will take time.

The top of my left foot is all swollen after playing basketball Saturday. I changed directions real fast and felt a lot of pain in front and above my ankle. At first, there was a bit of a mouse on the top of my foot on the left side, now the whole top foot is swollen. What is going on?

Could be this:

http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cy...or_tendons.htm

Inflammation of the Extensor tendons of the toes (extensor tendinitis)

What are the extensor tendons?

The tendons which straighten the toes run along the top of the foot and are known as the extensor tendons. They are the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor hallucis brevis, extensor digitorum longus and extensor digitorum brevis. These tendons can become inflamed causing pain and swelling. Inflammation of the tibialis anterior is most common but inflammation of the extensor digitorum muscles is rare.

What are the symptoms of inflammed extensor tendons?

  • Pain on the top of the foot (dorsal foot pain).
  • Diffuse swelling on the top of the foot.
  • Pain along the top of the foot which is worse during running.
  • Pain when the tendons are passively stretched.
