I've had Mexican food in Mexico and in California and I have to say I prefer Taco Time to anything "authentic." Even the real Mexican restaurants in Calgary I don't like. If it's not a soft meat burrito with mexi-fries I'm just not into it.

After going to Mexico, you might not be able to eat anything for a week anyway.

Man, if you're around Disneyland at all, hit up Taco Mi Pueblo for great Mexican food. Me and a couple buddies ate there pretty well every day we were in LA. Really cheap, and really, really good.
Actually the one time, we had a bit of a miscommunication between who was leaving the tip, and four people ended up leaving a tip. I think we just about paid for the meal twice haha.
Edit---So I'm slow on the typing...sue me! Honestly though if you're not sick of that style of food at that point you really should give it a shot. Actually there's a whole bunch of restaurants and such around there so if that isn't your style, then I'm sure you could find something else to tickle your fancy.

If you're looking to entertain a one year old, there are lots of little places you can go around LA without battling a crowd at a theme park. You could entertain a one year old at Griffith Park. They have pony rides, a little train, and the LA Zoo is right there. Also, the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach is a pretty quick drive and the tanks are huge and colorful and a little kid would love that. They can pet seals and dolphins and the otters are crazy little creatures that make kids laugh. I would avoid Venice Beach with a kid as the crowd is unpredictable. But Santa Monica pier has some rides and plenty of places to eat on the Promenade and you could let your little one take of their shoes and play on the beach. There's a place in Malibu called Troutdale, they give you a very simple fishing pole and some corn for bait and any little kid can catch a fish there.
I can't really remember all the places I used to take my kids when they were babies and toddlers but there is a lot to do. I"ll post as I remember. BTW, my little one calls the Getty Museum the most boring place on earth. Its a fantastic place to visit, but kids don't really get it.

Thanks for these - I think the Aquarium of the Pacific is a definite and the Griffith Park sounds good too.

Taking the Bus from the airport to Santa Monica Beach only takes like 20-30 min, and costs $0.50. At least it did in 2002. I also took the train from Hollywood boulevard to LAX, which was also pretty cheap and easy. In fact, the only difficult, expensive, and slow travel I had on those stopovers, was in a cab. If you can avoid the roads, do so. If you can't, take side roads more, avoid the freeways.

Well, I would strongly second driving down to San Diego for a day or 3 . In LA, I am sure your wife would like to see Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive. Go to the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach, have lunch at Canter's Deli. Go get mugged on Hollywood Blvd while looking at the stars on the sidewalk...

It might be over-rated, but it's still a damn fine burger. At the very least, it will be a satisfying meal, even if it doesnt blow you away.

I have a strange craving for Taco time's hot sauce quite often, but to suggest it's better than authentic Mexican food is plain crazy.
