The Lady Dinos play ACAC hockey, so probably not. Besides, take away MRU, and SAIT would have no competition at all for hockey.

Wow, I just realized your username wasn't MRC biology. I just always assumed you took bio at MRC.

Not really a big deal to me - if it's just a name change and an ability to grant full degrees, I'll still go to U of C. When push comes to shove, name value and credibility makes a difference when it comes to putting your alma mater on a resume, and in the Western Canadian business or engineering world, U of C is a no-brainer. That's just my experience applying for jobs and doing hiring myself. I'm sure MRC (er, MRU) will produce good talent, but all things being equal, I'll take the U of C grad.
Keep in mind that your undergraduate programs are only limited in scope; it's all about the graduate programs that really counts when it comes to choosing a university. Med school, architecture school, Law school, etc.

Hey, I'm not nearly that much of a downer.
Although, having taken a course at MRC because it was full at the U of C (I attend the U of C obviously) and having known many people that attended MRC the ratings, in terms of toughness are as follows:
High School 4/10
MRC 5/10
University 8/10
MRC is SOOOO much like HS compared to the U of C. About 10x more people smoke, are part of cliques, still act "cool" etc etc. Not to mention the fact that classes are WAY easier compared to the U.
No offence to anyone who goes to MRC but it is clearly a level below "real" university.
To be fair I have no knowledge of their University degrees so maybe they've stepped it up but in my experience and from the experiences of friends I've heard MRC is pretty lax compared to the U.

Just got back from eating lunch at MRU. The school is acting like it is a big secret, lol. "join us at 2:30 for the historic big announcement!", meanwhile, CFCN has a reporter on campus interviewing people about the change.

I doubt the Cougars will move to CIS. When Augustana University College became University of Alberta, Augustana Faculty the Vikings stayed in ACAC. I'd imagine that it would be the same type of case for Mount Royal.

It's the Alberta government that's forcing them to do that.
Everyone here has known about the announcement since March, but the Alberta Gov't is the one who gets to make the announcement for good press, so technically no one can say anything until they do.

I'm not sure what idiot classes your "special" friends were taking... but all degree granting courses are held to a certain standard across the country. MRC/U had to get accredited just like UofC did - there is no difference in how "hard" a class is from one institution to the next.

Apparently reading isn't your strong point so I'll say it again but more clearly.
I took a single U of C class (bio 211 or something IIRC) at MRC because it was full at the U of C. I sat in on the U of C course quite frequently because I had friends in that course, I then went to my course at MRC and it was a joke compared to the U of C course. I have numerous friends who say that MRC is like a slightly harder version of HS and then went to a University and found it was way harder and MRC hadn't really prepared them for how much harder University is than HS.
I then said rather clearly in my original post that perhaps with MRC becoming a University they have made their degree programs more on par with how the U of C is and that I wasn't sure because I am not at MRU taking a degree. In fact until someone who has experience at the U of C goes there it is impossible to compare the two institutions and considering they JUST became a university it is impossible for you to so rudely say they are equal.
So as you can see there are varying degrees of "hard" that a class can be. Not saying their entire degree program is a joke, but that when comparing ONE class and a few NON DEGREE programs from the past (IE prior to MRC being a University) I find that MRC is WAY easier than the U of C.
Of course now that they are UNIVERSITY, which they weren't before, that may change.
I don't know why I had to say any of this again, I thought it was pretty clear the first time.
Clearly you would have benefited from taking a few reading comprehension courses. (from the U of C of course because they are harder )

Well, actually I've heard this too... from friends who went to MRC.. uh, MRU and then over to the U of C. I've heard many an occasion of these people saying that MRU was easier in terms of classes. As well, I've also heard the 'high school clique' thing just like Flip has. I'm not saying it's true (I never went to MRC), but I've definitely heard the same thing that Flip heard.
If I had to go back to school right now, I'd still take U of C 100x over. The quality of education is better and the reputation is higher. Then again, I'm a business student, so I'd much prefer that specfic program over any business program at MRU. I'm very proud I went to Haskayne, one of the top undergrad business schools in the country.

Again, to be fair, I should clarify why I think MRC was like that (I'll not speak about MRU because as I have CLEARLY said, I have no knowledge of the quality of the brand new MRU).
Also before I even get into it I will make it clear that I am about to generalize but in no way, shape or form am I saying that this is clear about ALL MRC students.
The U of C is basically the top 20% of all students, while MRC are the kids that couldn't get into the U of C (generally). As such there are a higher percentage of kids that don't study really hard and as such got lower marks in HS and hence why they are going to MRC.
To be extra clear, that is not a slight against MRC students, my sister went there briefly and now has a masters degree and is a very successful psychologist. However, in general it is more like HS because IMO more kids that go there aren't as serious about school as U of C students and as such it is more like HS and the classes are a little easier.

"Apparently reading isn't your strong point so I'll say it again but more clearly."
I never said the two were equal, but any degree granting institution must have very similar standardized curriculum's. Obviously the UofC has a better reputation as it's been around longer, but if you take a Computer Science Degree at MRU as opposed to UofC, you're going to be tested/evaluated very similarly.
But I mean I guess you could argue UofC is "harder" because of larger class sizes and bankruptcy looming sure.
I'm not going to comment on the cliques as I'm not a student here, but I would imagine it would be more highschool"ish" as some students would probably explore going here to see if they were serious about carrying on in post-secondary.

I agree. I attended MRC and it was just a big high school. Loudest library in the history of Libraries and there were so many "groups' you would only see in High School.
I think it's gonna take time for employers to actually respect a MRU degree. If i was hiring I'd want a UofC graduate instead of MRU graduate but that's just me.
