It's quite interesting to me what some of the trades in the competition are, including:

- web design
- graphic design
- network administration
- application development

These are right in there with what are considered more mundane trades like contruction, electrician, plumbing, car repair, etc.

I've long considered IT to be more of a specialized trade skill than a professional position; it's interesting that apparently this shift in perception is occuring for real elsewhere too. There are a lot of parallels between the two, except that your car mechanic isn't on call 24x7 I guess...sigh....

I took part in the Alberta skills competition doing web design back in 2000. Been part of it for a while now.

And who pays for the good waiter from some far-flung place to come all the way to Canada to demonstrate waitering skills?

Overheard at local foreman's office: "All these foreigners coming over here, taking our jobs... Get out of here! Oh wait... they have Super Skills? In that case, the job's all yours! (Sorry Dave, but I did manage to get you an late-night internship at Tim Horton's)"

Apparently it's a big deal all over the world ... except here. Hell, even Bush (the crappier one) met with the American team at the airport a few years ago. Apparently Harper's participation has been disappointing.

I think we should put a plan in place that would exterminate all foreigners by 2015

I was hoping the "foreigner" featured on the front page of yesterday's Sun was in the "minister to jammies' every perverse whim" contest, but after re-reading the events list, it's not even on there anymore!
