But wait...the thing that does work, and it does, came in an email. How did you discover it if you don't believe anything that comes in emails?

How old are you Grandpa?

You realize this is a repeating cycle don't you? By time the current old generation dies off, your generation is going to replace it and the younger generation at that time will view you as redundant, out of touch and in need of culling. Perhaps you shouldn't wish for the cycle to accelerate. You know, the law of unintended consequences and all that.

I was just thinking about this the other day and I realized that in the 9 months I've owned this vehicle, I have never once used my key to open it. Lol. My key holes are still virgins.

Exactly, I don't know if I've ever used the key locks on the outside of the car either, and mine's about the same old as yours. I start to wonder why they even bother putting the locks on the outside of the car in the first place. My guess is that car manufacturers will stop putting them on in a few years. VW already only puts one on the driver's side, not on the passenger's side.

Some people will say, "what if the batteries on my remote die, or my car battery is dead?" However, the drivers side only keyhole in my 1999 Jetta had no physical connection to the locking mechanism anyway, all it was is a switch that would tell the car to unlock the door.

Lots of cars, don't even have keys of any kind these days. My dad's Prius, you just leave the key in your pocket, you never have to touch the key. if the key's in your pocket when you pull the door handle, the car will unlock, then you just press the power button on the dash. When you leave the car, you just press the black button on the handle to lock the car.

The other day at Rona I saw power locks for your front door. I look forward to the day when I'm keyless.

I always wondered with those keyless locks for houses. Wouldn't it be vulnerable to a thief with a duster of powder to determine the most common digits used, and work out the combo to open the lock? Granted, it'll take time and hard to hide, but it is a possibility

Anyone tried to unlock the front door to their house with their car key fob by pressing the 'unlock' button?

I love the Microsoft email beta test tracking. You can get paid thousands by Bill Gates just to participate!

Too funny.

I try to "swipe" my door lock with my transit pass. And sometimes I like to get through the subway turnstile by taking out my keys.

For the first while I would just change the combo a couple times using all the numbers or just play and hit all the numbers lots. Would prevent this maybe.

You can get locks that you just scan your fingerprint to unlock the door too.

Isolate a distinct finger print from the scanner using magnetic dust. Put on latex gloves and press down against the fingerprint you just isolated
(At least it worked in "Drop Zone" and I think Mythbusters did a feature on picking fingerprint scanners)

There was a mythbusters episode where they licked a photocopy of someone's finger and it unlocked the door.

I think it was Kermitology that nailed it...the lock mechanism uses RF to communicate...

Not such a stupid myth, early television remotes used sound, not IR or RF as a communication protocol. We used to change channels by shaking our keychains!
