Student refuses to take 'demeaning' test

I love people like this. You can just see her as a child...Screaming at her mom (who she doesn't want to 'disrespect') to buy her a candy bar while in line at the super market.

When I applied to the University of Victoria I had to take an english proficiency test because I was coming in from out-of-province. Even though I'd got something like 89% on my English 30 diploma.

So I took thirty minutes out of my Saturday, went in and wrote the stupid test.

This girl will probably grow up to be the kind of person who wants us to get rid of dogs or something stupid like that.

I wrote a bit about this in my blog already. If you're applying for a job and you're a University Graduate. The company is well within it's right to test you on everything like spelling, grammar and typing. What are you going to do? Wave the "I'm a University Graduate" card and find all tests demeaning?

why should this be different from all the other idiotic standardized tests you take thru-out school. if anything she shouldnt be exempt from it and it should become a test everyone takes in english class.

I know it really is just all semantics, but I think they could have avoided this situation by simply calling it:

English as a PRIMARY language and English as a SECONDARY language.

Even though I was born in Canada, technically speaking, English really was my second language (as in second one learned).

If that doesn't satisfy her, and she still refuses to check the box to "protect her heritage" then for sure STFU and write the stupid test.

Yeesh. That test is there to PROTECT people with English as a second language, so they won't be dropped into a course above their heads. It's there to benefit people, not disparage them. What's the harm to people like her with good English? She has to write one easy test? Seems like the benefits of the rule vastly outweigh the disadvantages.

I think it's discriminatory that I don't know a second language and there is no test to confirm that I know jack about any other language. There has to be some sort of discrimination against me here.

Britain is being overrun by immigrants who want to rewrite all their laws and cultures and customs into their own language (like the Sharia movement). It's absurb. If you goto another country to live and make a livelihood, you should make an effort to learn their language, culture, and customs and appreciate what is valuable about it.

I have Asian firends who moved here when they were around 5 or 6 years old. At that point they spoke mostly Chinese/Japanese; but now speak English as good or gooder than me; and have a tough time speaking in their native language to their relatives. To me this smacks of somebody who said "I'm going to check that box so that my A in English will be turned into an A+." Well, turns out they are testing her on that.

She's not applying for a job, she's going to high school. I don't see how your comparison is applicable at all.

The purpose of the test is legitimate, but it's the lack of common sense and flexibility that makes it a problem. If someone has a 3.9 GPA is there really a need to put them through this process? Of course not. The fact that something happens in other places doesn't make it legitimate, it just makes it more widespread.
