Nice pick. Out of curiosity, what did Modern Library say was first?

Wow--goes to show how subjective those lists are! I would have ranked Gatsby ahead of Ulysses, and neither would have been first for me--though definitely top 25 or 50 or so.

Ulysses gets no where near my list of top literature. Personal preference. I read a very convincing article one time that Ulysses was actually just a giant practical joke played on the London literary establishment.

Maybe it was--but is that necessarily a bad thing? I'm not just playing devil's advocate; isn't part of being experimental thumbing your nose at the "literary establishment"?

I agree Iowa, if anything it makes Ulysses better and more understandable.

I just get peeved off at lit students attempting to extract meaning from Ulysses.

Team PaperCuts is happy to select in the World Lit Category!

CIEN AŅOS DE SOLEDAD
(One Hundred Years of Solitude)
By Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The novel chronicles a family's struggle and the history of their fictional town, Macondo. Although the title hints that the story spans one hundred years, it is unclear exactly how much time the narrative covers, and most critics agree that it is more than one hundred years. This ambiguity contributes to the novel's treatment of Time, as there is a notion that time lapses, repeats, changes speeds, or stops altogether at different parts of the story, and that all the events happen simultaneously, in a way.
