Well, if you need compression at the tracking stage, maybe don't have the mic so close to the source?

Some guys, man, it just looks like their finger is vibrating...but seriously it works, and sounds WAY better once you get the hang of it.

Sorry, I was a bit confusing there - I don't compress at all when tracking, only after mixing all the tracks down to a final version of the song.

AH, IC IC.

Give the fader-riding trick a try. You might like it. Else you can map out the automation point-to-point in ProTools, but that is tedious and more visual dependant.

FYI, to get the Zeppelin drum sound, at the tracking stage send a blend of kick and snare to a tube compressor using a pre-fader auxiliary. Then mash the living holy f*** out of it, and output it back to the board on an open channel. Then blend with the existing tracks.
