A very relevant point. I'm not a racist, and I do try to treat people with respect, patience, and tolerance (that goes for everyone, not just foreign people), but that being said, stereotypes do exist for a reason. Until the people that promote the stereotypical _________ (white, brown, black, asian, ect...) guy stop, the problems of racisim will never be solved.

Right! That applies to ALL sorts of prejudices. If you see, for example (and I'm describing myself here) a bleach blonde woman with umm certain endowments and big blue eyes what do you think???OK here in SoFla it's stripper!!!Bimbo!!! Homewrecker!!!because ya know what...there's lots of that here!!! Maybe I shoiuld keep my hair mouse brown and get surgery. I dont know. What stereotypes of guys make them miserable?? I've never considered that question...

Im guessing your Chinese grandparents are more racist than you are as well, no? I sure as hell know mine are.

And I definitely agree with Killer, Canada, despite some shortcomings, is probably the friendliest nation on the planet to people of all kinds. Try going to Europe or Japan and you'll see things there are countlesly worse.
Exactly.

Older people tend to be more intolerant of other races.

But as every generation dies off, it gets better and better.

You have Chinese grandparents??

Seriously though, racism is disgusting and it bothers me whenever I encounter it. It works both ways too. I see it everyday. I get looked down upon for being white.

NOT racist.

It's physically descriptive language.

Sometimes the racism gets 'passed down' as it were. My uncle is pretty racist against anyone who is not white basically.. he won't let his children play with any of those kids.. I wonder what these kids are going to be like. I really hope they grow up to rebel against the ideals they've been raised with.

So if I am reading in between the lines correctly, we should exterminate the elderly to create a better world?

I think age and generations have a lot to do with it.

It was a scandal when my grandparents got married because one was Catholic and the other Anglican. Now, in just two generations,no one even blinked when some of my cousins married asians -and religion wasn't even on the map as far as discussion goes. All that crap was replaced with (gasp) love for their spouse, ability to keep a job, where they were going to live.

I think as we get more into a global marketplace and the advance of communication technology people get more exposed to diversity and therefore become more accepting.

Having said that, I will have no tolerance if my daughter ever wants to marry an Oilers fan who won't convert. That is just unacceptable.

No.

In my opinion the real solution is about tolerating intolerance.

I am intolerant towards racisim and terrorism. That is acceptable. That is the solution.

Seriously though, I think that as long as the elderly step back and make room for the younger generation to step in, there shouldn't be a problem.

There is a huge difference between my grandparents, and my parents in terms of tolerance and acceptance. And then from my parents to me. I'm sure a lot of people can attest to that.

My cousin was afraid of "coming out of the closet"... particularly living in semi-rural Nova Scotia. He was afraid that he would be shunned from the family. So when my mother invited him AND HIS BOYFRIEND to Christmas dinner he was very much surprised. He later privately told me of his surprise and I said that I was sure to bring my mother up right.

And while that was in jest, it is somewhat true. The younger generation can have an impact on their elders. I mean, maybe it was dirty pool to tell my mother that I would pay for a movie for her "being such a great mother" and then take her to "Philadelphia"... but that and the discussion afterwards helped her get over her homophobia.

Assuming that gramps is a bigot and will always be a bigot might be selling the old guy short.

Yes it's frustrating to be a victim of these cases but they are pretty isolated. Canada is extremely tolerant and mostly importantly everyone is equal 'legally'.
We Chinese get the same opportunities and some have gone on to become CEOs, surgeons, politicians etc etc..

Send a white person to Asia and see if he/she gets the same opportunities or not.

Luckily I haven't faced much racism being Canadian-born.
I'm the 'exotic' looking Asian chick

I don't think the comment was racist, it was ignorant and rude and they should be ashamed for saying it. I think the label racist is thrown around waaaaaaaayyyyyyy to much and easily these days. You're a racist if you call comeone by the colour of their skin, you're a racisit if you say anything bad about some group or even individual that is not white.

I am not a racist person by any stretch of the imagination, but I have been called such a few times on this site for making a point or disagreeing with a certain opinion.

Are you talking about the old guys comment? How was it not racist?
