You would own 10% of the condo unit for life (or until you decided to sell). The weeks would rotate every year so you wouldn't get the exact same weeks every year.

I've been keeping my eye on a timeshare in Maui, but I'm being particular on where I'd like to buy.
I've sat through numerous timeshare presentations, and I've seen them sold as high as $40k!!! Look at the link I provided and check out the discounts you can get...
|
Can you briefly explain how it works?

Week swaps with the other owners would probably be the best option. Being on Big Mountain, there is bound to be other owners that are more interested in just the winter weeks for the skiing.

alot of the problem with week swap is let say your week is in hawaii but you want to go to florida.... well you have to find someone who owns a week in florida who wants to go to hawaii.... or you have to hope the person in florida cant find somewhere they wanna go and those people want to go to hawaii..... its a mess sometimes.... but if your flexible then it works

Can I get the same weeks every year if I want in one location. For example, buy a timeshare in Florida for $20,000 and get june and july if I wanted? Does that happen?

Think about what you are asking MJK. You want not only peak time, but all peak time. The time when you are off is also the time that everybody with kids takes off to be on vacation with them.
I would call peak times June, July, August, Christmas and spring break. That is about 4 months, or about 1/3 of the weeks. If I was in the timeshare I would want those weeks too.
This is why I bought land to build a cabin. I can go whenever I want. Timeshares are good for people with flexible vacation time.

Depends. If you're a teacher, then those are peak times. If you're pretty much anyone else, the cold winter months are the peak times for getting away from this frigid wasteland and heading somewhere hot.

I also thought xmas and spring would be peak times, especially in the south where it is super hot and there are hurricanes!
Lots of people don't travel in June and July becuase they say it is just too hot and the weather is unpredictable. Also, most schools are off in Aug so wouldnt those who want to take their kids while on summer holidays be July and Aug?
I just want to know if it happens. I live in the North and can only use a Cabin for 2 months of the year if I bought one. DO I spend $100K on a cabin to use 2 months/year OR do I look into this timeshare stuff?
Seems liek a timeshare would work if I can find something available for June and July.
Is it possible?

the short answer is yes you can ...... the problem is finding a timeshare in a place you want to go every year in those locations with that peak week open... timeshare is based on colors usually red , white, blue.... you will some companies use ultra red super red red, white, blue.... these usually happen in hawaii where its always peak time but sometimes are a lil slower... I used to sell Timeshare and still have a few contacts... anywhere your speciifically looking? Ill be perfectly honest here .... Unless you like going to the same place all the time , for a full 7 days , you will hate fixed week timeshare...... you will also hate floating weeks or a point system because then its based on availability so guess what weeks fill up first? those peak weeks ....
However if you dont mind going the same place every year then a fixed week is great and is usually a good value if you use it .... I will also say dont go to a resort and buy it unless you can get a great deal ... There are people looking to get out of their timeshare now and you can get a great deal with a private seller or a resale place ... As a matter of fact my dad is trying to sell his points based timeshare right now ok not really sell but he doesnt use it and doesnt wanna pay for it .... I wont give you details on it unless you pm me and ask but like i said if your wanting the same time every year fixed week is the way to go
edit also most companies are part of RCI or II which allow to exchange with other places and go different places but off course you have to pay a fee in addition to your timeshare payment and your maitenence fee.... its usually 199 bucks a yeat to be a part of RCI then 164/199 US/INTL to exchange a week for another week

and MJK in addition to what i wrote up there.. ,when i sold which i stopped doing last year.. the average for a week in a bedroom condo in timeshare was 16,000 grand.... and an 800 mait. fee ... i cant imagine 5 weeks... my biggest sale every was a guy who wanted 52000 pts which would make him the highest bracket owner at our company and make him GOLD.... it cost him 61,000 and he wrote a check for it ... it blew my mind easiest sell i ever made..... he get maybe 5 weeks out of it depending on location and time of year... although because was a gold owner he got a deal with the company that he could call 90 days in advance and get any cancellations or availble rooms for 39 dollars a night if he was out of points or wanted to rent for friends

Ok thanks for answering my questions.
I am not fussy at all where I go really. I would even go to a place like Canmore...some timeshare places there right?

My family had some in Fairmont and Kelowna. I'm sure they are some in Canmore.
But really, I don't get the point of going to small town Canada for a vacation at the same place for 30 years!
I'd rather stay home! I never enjoyed our family vacations as a kid in timeshares.

Most people would stay home but you would think twice if you lived in a town of 300 people year round. There are two stores here, both sell groceries and a few hunting supplies. Thats it. There is only so much hunting and fishing you can do before you need a break from it all.
The summer for me is an escape from my job. After work I always see the students around and they often come to my house. It is important for me to get out and relax.
I hope that helps. Actually, I am going to start a new thread about where and how I live.
