How do CO2 cannisters in cans work?

I'm guessing that when they are put in the cans it is under pressure, and when the can is opened and the pressure released, the cannister opens and releases the CO2. Is that correct?

Not sure if you are thinking about normal sized cans.... but if you are, there's no canisters in them.

Sure there are, but none of the domestic beers have them. I bought a 4 pack of either Smithwicks or Kilkenny (I can't recall which) last week that have little cannisters in them.

Edit: It was Kilkenny, and it is a nitrogen cannister.
Quote:
A ping-pong ball-like “rocket widget” is added to the product during the canning phase at the brewery. The widget ball contains nitrogen (N2). When the can is opened, the valve inside the widget is broken and nitrogen gas is released into the beer, forming a finely-bubbled, beautiful head. The widget ball is found in Kilkenny and Guinness beer cans.

I've had one of those and I thought it was fantastic. Poured very well, tasted great and was reasonably priced.

Haha, on BSD my first year we cut open a can of Guinness so that we could see the Widget. And then we played ping pong with it

Why pay 38 bucks for some gimmicky crap that only has the volume of 15 beers?
