Scoring Winger
|
The Colorado Avalanche made it 6 wins and 9 unbeaten Thursday night as they toppled the Jackets 6-3. It was however a costly victory. Star right winger Alex Mogilny was injured early in the 3rd period and will miss 2-4 weeks of the Avs schedule. While Radivojevic will fill the gap he in turn leaves a gap needing plugged and may force the Avs in to a deal.
Back to the action on the night and it was the Jackets that took an early lead through Clark after just 34 seconds. Colorado hit back hard though, scoring 3 straight goals to leave the shocked Jackets trailing 3-1 after the first period. Colorado's top line picked up where they left off last night by combining for Joe Thornton to equalise on helpers from Mogilny and Nylander, followed five minutes later by a goal from Mogilny himself. Sedin and Beaudoin getting the assits on the go-ahead goal. Dan Cleary chipped in a 3rd late in the period with Sedin chalking up a second assist and Radivojevic also gettin in on the act. All first period goals were even strength.
The Jackets came roaring back in the second and midway through got 2 quick goals of their own. Dupuis and Madden scoring just 2 minutes apart to tie the game at 3. However the games defining moment came with just under 90 seconds to play in the period. With Colorado killing a penalty Beaudoin hustled the puck off of the BJ's and squeezed it to McLaren who set Thornton free for his 2nd of the night, the Avs taking a 4-3 lead in to the intermission on account of the short-handed marker.
The Avs proved their worth with the extra man in the 3rd, Trnka getting his 4th of the year on the power-play with Sedin and Radivojevic setting up the able defenseman to rifle home. The win was given a slightly more emphatic look late in the day as Radivojevic scored one himself from Sedin (his 4th helper of the night) and Aki Berg.
All in all a good nights work for Colorado as the streak continues.
Notes/Propaganda
Avs power play struggled, scoring only once on 11 opportunites. However only 3 penalties were taken in a pleasing improvement of team discipline.
Turek stopped 23 of 26 shots.
Sedin, Radivojevic, Thornton, Mogilny and Beaudoin all had multi-point nights.
Colorado now has a 3 point conference lead over the Ducks and Sharks who have one game in hand each.
Pavel Trnka has a 7 game point scoring streak, the longest of any defenseman in the league.
Beaudoin is the CPHL's 3rd higest scoring rookie.
Avs returned to top of Penalty Killing table.

RANGERS 4 KINGS 4
The LA Kings managed a 4-4 tie with the talented New York Rangers on Thursday night.
Scott Gomez was named first star in the game after scoring a goal and an assist. Again, Mattias Weinhandl scored a powerplay goal and P.J. Axelsson scored his second shorthanded goal of the year. Weinhandl is tied for third in powerplay goals and Axelsson leads the league in shorthanded goals.
New York stormed back in the third period, but luckily Mike Peca was able to tie the game back up before regulation expired.
The Kings spent nearly all of overtime short-handed but were able to emerge unscathed.
The Monarchs were slaughtered by Hartford 11-2.

Ducks bag a Bruin!
Press Release.
The Ducks came out flying, and made a steady migration the the penalty box.
On the plus side they were able to kill off 9 Bruin powerplays, the bad side is they allowed 2 PP goals. However capitalizing on specials teams is what this Duck team is all about, Rob Blake scored on the powerplay at the midway point of the 3rd period. The play that broke the Bruins spirit was the game tying goal by Oleg Kvasha at 13:06 of the 2nd.
Almost all the industy experts had the Bruins winning this one in a walk, how wrong they were.
When reached for comment GM Halifax Drunk had this to say between beers "*hic* to quote Homer Simpson, when you participate in sporting events, its not whether you win or loose: it's how drunk you get. Lucky for me I get to do both of the good things, drink and win!"
Kristian Kudroc was injured in the 3rd period by a clearly intentional knee on knee hit by Chris Chelios. GM Drunk was irate, "I guarantee you will NEVER see that son-of-a-bi*#h Chris in a Ducks jersey.....EVER! That type of hockey has no place in the CPHL. Chelios knew that we were going to win and just did it on purpose. Luckily, Kristian kind of got out of the way but landed awkwardly on his shoulder, doctors are tending to him, but he will rest tomorrow for sure.”

Wild Survive
Snow Stands Tall as Short Handed Minnesota wins in OT
They were dropping like flies.
It started with an injury to center David Vyborny just 30 seconds into the game.
8 minutes later Willie Mitchell, playing his first game back after his 4 game suspension, also went down.
And less than 2 minutes after that, Matthias Ohlund was kicked out of the game on a questionable call. Halfway into the first period the Wild found themselves down 3 players including their top defensive pairing.
Ah, but it wasn’t done yet. #2 centre Andrew Burnette was also kicked out of the game 10 minutes into the 2nd. Four players down…game over…right?
Wrong.
Surprisingly, the Wild produced a 3-2 OT win over St. Louis, relying on solid netminding from Garth Snow and their #1 line. GM and Head Coach Grant Farhall was both proud of his team, but disgusted with some of the calls.
“Can you believe that…we have 2 guys go down to injuries because of dirty plays by the Blues and yet its our team that gets 2 guys kicked out. 11 power plays to 3 in favor of the Blues? I could go on and on. Regardless, I am immensely proud of our team. We lost our #1 defensive pairing so some of our other defenseman had to step up and play huge minutes. And our #1 line really came through tonight. Brendan played over 30 minutes and potted the OT winner. And the Snowman really stood on his head. I just can’t say enough about the heart and character this team showed tonight in the face of some stiff odds.”
Farhall also reacted to comments made by the St. Louis GM who accused the Wild of dirty play.
“You’ve got to be kidding me. 11 powerplays and having two of our players kicked out wasn’t enough. His team was running our guys all night long. Apparently the Blues can dish it out but can’t take it. That’s fine – we are looking forward to our rematch.”
The good news after the game was that it would seem that none of the injured Wild players will be held out of tomorrow’s matchup against Atlanta. However, one must wonder how the team will play, with many players not 100% because of either injury or from having to play so many minutes against the Blues. It was also unclear whether Jocelyn Thibault would get the start, or if Farhall would go with the undefeated Garth Snow.
Game Notes: -With the win the Wild move back into a first place tie in the Mikita Dvision with the Predators.
-The suddenly red-hot Radek Dvorak and Jan Hrdina had the other Wild goals.
-Brendan Morrison extended his point scoring streak to a league high 10 games.
-Due to penalties and injuries, newly acquired Matthew Lombardi saw his ice time go from 1 minute in his first game to over 15 minutes. He was a –1 on the evening.

Oilers slide past Canucks
Use of excess grease aids in tight win
The Edmonton Oilers won their second game in a row, and second game under new GM Sylvanfan in a 4-3 matinee tilt against the Vancouver Canucks. With both teams looking at a cross country flight for games tommorrow the game was moved to 1:00 in the afternoon. This must have been news to the Oilers penalty killing unit as they failed to show up for the first 6 minutes of the game. Early powerplay goals by Mike Sillinger, and Darryl Sydor had the Canucks up 2-0 5:48 into the game and had Oiler GM Sylvanfan raiding Canuck GM Mango's tissue stash. After the heist the Oilers momentarily woke up and pulled within one goal late in the period as Jay McKee fired home a Jason Spezza pass on a shorthanded 2 on 1 break.
The Canucks restored their two goal lead 9 minutes into the second on a Francois Boulion goal from his own end of the centre ice mark. The Oilers did respond with a powerplay tally from Adam Foote at the 12:43 mark to cut the deficit to one.
The turning point of the game came early in the second period when Oiler nut goalie Thomas Vokun pasted Mike Sillinger into the boards early in the third. Brian Berard than hooked Vokun around the neck and hauled the flopping tender to the ice. After the ensuing melee the only penalty assessed was a hooking minor to Berard. Just seconds later Chad Kilger skated up to Vokun and whacked him in the head and put the Canucks two men short just 35 seconds into the period. The Oilers powerplay than barraged Marc Denis as the tender made several spectacular saves before Brendan Morrow was able to cash in a Bobby Holik rebound and nod the game at 3 and setting the stage for Alexander Frolov's heroics. Frolov the beneficiary of a nifty pass from Spezza on another 2-1 was able to direct the puck into an open cage at the 6:18 mark and put the Oilers ahead 4-3. The Canucks had a great chance to tie the game after Zherdev and McKee took minors 32 seconds apart 13 minutes into the final period. But a suddenly alive Vokin made two stunning saves on Ethan Moreau, and than sucked Ian Lapperiere into a roughing minor to reduce the Canuck man advantage to one. After that the Oilers were textbook in bringing the lead to the bank and cashing it in for the two points they desparately need.
This game like the last was not without it's controversy though, as Vokun made even more friends on the Canucks by skating out to the blue line and clipping an unsuspecting Donald Brashear with a hip check as the big winger was trying to get to the bench for a line change. The hit went unnoticed by the referees but was not lost on the Canuck players. Several of them vowing to take vengence on Vokun. Though not impressed Sylvanfan was happy with the win. "The Canucks played hard tonight and gave us everything we could handle. With 4 games in 5 nights we sure didn't want to loose this one. I toyed with the idea of using Hurme tonight, and maybe I should have as Thomas was a little off physically and mentally tonight. We decided to rest Morozov too, even though he was 97% for todays game as we felt we couldn't risk any further injuries to the Russian winger." Next up for the Oilers is a visit to Buffalo tommorrow to play another team trying to right the ship the Sabres. "When asked about a potential lineup shakeup Sylvanfan pointed in a different direction claiming to see Lui Passaglia and bolted out the door."

Predator's had a huge 4 point night from the Magnificent one and Hasek once again records a shutout to become the early favourite for the Vezina.
Unofrtunately Suchy and Kubina were injured during the game. Though Suchy is not on the injured list so he might be able to return next game.

Tie on another
By Heywood Jablome
The Philadelphia Flyers have pulled off yet another tie, this time a 2-2 draw with the Buffalo Sabres. Flyers GM Dan Lemmon was found pacing the halls of the Wachovia Center during and after tonights game, muttering to himself. After the injury to defenceman Roman Hamrlik in the third period, Lemmon reportedly ripped a fire extinguisher off of a wall and used that to knock a hand dryer off of a wall in the Club level bathrooms. He then took the hand dryer and bolted past security guards attempting to enter the Sabres dressing room to attack Sabres defenceman Robyn Regehr, who had been ejected for injuring Hamrlik.
League sources are suggesting that Lemmon will be fined heavly for his actions, after the game, Lemmon held a press conference, claiming that the injury to Hamrlik was intentional and wreckless disregard for a fellow player, and that he was "going to show that p****y Regehr what a real injury was." He then chastised the League for not suspending Regehr.
When asked if any good came out of the game Lemmon muttered that Esche is showing he wants to be a winner, then threw the hand dryer somehow re-aquired into the crowd of media, put on a cape and walked out of the room.
The team refused to comment on the recent behaviour of Lemmon, only citing that they are considering alcohol and anger management programs for the troubled GM.
As for the team, Eric Lindros continues to pace the team in points and forward Fredrik Modin who has gathered some critisim from his GM about his play, is now riding a 9 game point streak. Also responding to critisim blasted at him was forward Scott Walker, who scored the tying game in the third period.
After fleeing the press conference, this reporter managed to get another interview with Lemmon, and asked if he had any more fires to light under his players. He only replied with "Salvador, Reasoner and Somik better watch themselves.. I have many more hand dryers at my disposal."
The Flyers next game will be on Saturday versus division rivals the Washington Capitals. Lemmon said that he expects his team to slaughter the Capitals, and that he's had enough of "that p****y footing around with the Caps. Beat them or I'm beating you."
Kevin "Wanks" Weekes is expected to get the start, and rumors have it that the Flyers are intending on bringing up defenceman Thomas Pock from the Phantoms of the AHL.

BRUINS BAG A DUCK
Boston (AP) - It was a game of highs and lows for the CPHL favorite Boston Bruins. An electric first period saw the Bruins score 3 mighty goals. Unfortunately for them it was the only scoring they would get. With 11 powerplays the Bruins were able to capitalize on only 2 of them. The Ducks decided to play the entire 60 minutes and came out with the win.
The most heart-stopping (and controvertial) moment in the game came when 'Mighty' Duck Kristian Kudroc attempted to run Bruins vet Chris Chelios. In his attempt to jump out of the way of the rabid Kudroc, Chelios collided knee on knee with the rookie Duck. An obvioulsy drunk Ducks GM HalifaxDrunk was absolutely livid on the bench. HD was warned twice by the refs to calm down or watch the rest of the game in the dressing room. Bruins GM KevanGuy was calm, cool and collected. "Well, that kid learned his lesson the hard way. Maybe when he is lying in bed watching the Ducks next game he will think about the concequences of his actions. Running a guy like Chelios isnt going to do you any favors the next time the two teams meet."
All the drama took its toll on Bruins self-appointed cheerleader THE Brian Holzinger. He was seen openly weeping on the bench after the incident. Potential CPHL All-Star Eric Rasmussen comforted THE Brian Holzinger for the remainder of the game. The two roommates have become quite close since Weimer was shipped out for Rasmussen, cash and a draft pick.
Next up for the Bruins is a tough game against the Canucks. KevanGuy warned his team against overconfidence, "Teams on losing streaks are dangerous. The law of averages says the streak needs to come to an end sooner rather than later. The way we are playing this year is conducive to streak-breaking."
