I guess if the lineup doesn't suck, that will help as well.

Can you elaborate? I've only had good experiences at Mac Hall.

Well, firstly - not to say that I am endorsing bad behavior, but they have amped up security to ridiculous levels; at the last show I was at, I was forced on several opportunities to tap security guards on the back and ask them to move out of the way, after they took the liberty of waltzing in and planting themselves directly in front of me. I mean, I'm at a rock show - yes, marijuana is illegal, but I'd rather be able to actually watch the show than try to get any comfort from the fact that there are more meat monkeys around to stop people from toking up or drinking their own booze. A little weed smoke at a show doesn't bother me too much, anyway. Not like I'm in church or something, you know?
Secondly - getting booze at the shows. Used to be that even if a show wasn't licensed, there'd be a section near the back of the venue where people with appropriate ID could go and enjoy a drink while watching the concert. My understanding is that this contravened some kind of fire code, so the licensed area was moved outside to that little corridor between the stairwell and Jugo Juice. Not sure how cramming people into that little space is somehow more safe, but, I can deal with it, even if I am a little miffed at the change. Which normal concert-goer who's reached the age of majority doesn't like to enjoy a couple of cold drinks with their friends at the concert? I know I do. And it's somewhat inconvenient, it can't be argued, to try and time the enjoyment of said beverages such that their completion precedes the beginning of the concert, to say nothing of the fact that having to drink them in a seperate room altogether takes away from the overall experience of enjoying a drink with the show.
As I said though, this was a forgiveable annoyance. However, what is not forgiveable was the scenario at my most recent Mac Hall show. This show was billed as "licensed"; I had to show ID to just to get in. It being a Friday night after a long week I was looking forward to enjoying a frosty brew and was quite excited that this was to be possible in conjunction with the concert itself. No Jugo Juice sardine can this time, I was certain; but I was wrong. Although by entering the venue I was required to declare my adulthood, I was for some inexplicable reason herded into a sardine can-like beer gardens on an entirely different floor than the venue to enjoy my beer... I was left to wonder how, exactly, this was a licensed show, when indeed I was not free to carry my beer with me as I pleased. Worst of all, I ended up missing the first few songs of the set and ultimately left a nearly-full can of Heineken in the beer gardens so that I wouldn't miss any more.
Granted, these might seem like minor problems to many, but to me, they have become too great to ignore. Knowing that it didn't used to be like this at Mac Hall only makes it worse. I've given up. I'll watch shows in bars or at the Dome I guess - you are allowed to bring your crack Dome beer wherever you want, right?

i agree completely and they are not minor problems. i went to wolfmother and the 2 girls i was with who are both about 5 foot nothing and 100 pounds both got kicked out for jumping up and down. not moshing, not pushing people, nobody even gave it a second thought...except for the a-hole security.
i almost got kicked out of a show because while i was in the stupid beer gardens from which the show is barely visible some random chick on the outside ( i was leaning over the railing watching the show) stole my beer and the jerk off security tried to kick me out for violating the rules and drinking outside the barrier. of course i screamed bloody murder until the head security guy came over and let me stay.
i don't know what it is about the security at the U of C and maybe it is the SU trying to keep a good image but i rarely will see shows their even for bands i like because it is so lame.

The Virgin festival in Vancouver had a terrible lineup...the one in Toronto had a good lineup...hopefully Calgary gets some good acts.

I was at both days of the Toronto V-fest back in September, and had an excellent time. The bands were awesome (Pumpkins, Bjork, Killers, Metric, Arctic Monkeys, etc.) the booze and food were reasonably priced, and the location was nice. For $160 bucks, it was well worth it (I would probably have paid that for just the Pumpkins and the Arctics). The only problem was waiting for the ferry at the end of the night, which wont be a problem at Ft. Calgary (needles might be, though).

Mac Hall, I cursed out the people scanning tickets back at the Machine Head show. It was one of those lines that goes up the stairs, through the food court and wrapped around the little kiosk waaaay at the other end. Almost missed the band I came there to see, it took an insane amount of time to get to the front, just inchign along and I discovered that there was 1 person scanning tickets. One. I just lost it, they tried to yell back at me, I just shouted them down and walked past them. Holy crap I was angry. Incompetence.
As for the booze, I'm glad they moved the beer gardens out of the main room. If you can't go without alcohol for 2 hours while you watch a band then you have problems. Go to a bar, sit there in the dark and drink yourself silly.
