So too would the Pioneer league. Unless MLB decides to expand, we're pretty much frozen out of affiliated ball. Though Calgary could make a go of it in the PL without Edmonton.
That said, I'd put both the Vipers and the Dawgs as being a higher calibre than rookie ball. The kids in the PL have the talent, but at 18-19, haven't exactly honed their skills.

A few notes:
-88 game schedule is, I believe, a few less than the Northern League's 96 last year, so 4 less regular season home games.
-"The team plays at 6500 seat Foothills Stadium and regularly fills the stadium with a passionate fan base" WTF?
-On the Vipers website, Peter Young said that there will only be 4 road trips for the Vipers this year, thus reducing travel costs hugely. This means they will be away 2 weeks @ a time...does this mean that they will have to be @ home for two weeks @ a time? Long home stands aren't great either...I see a lot of trips to Edmonton to break them up.

Lesse, Calgary drew 71,363 fans to the park this year. That averages out to <drum roll>
Fifteen hundred fifty one fans a game. But yeah, regularly fill sounds about right.
One wonders if the Cracker-Cats will try and spin the same bull tomorrow.

For the GBL, that is actually above average.
With only four southern road trips, I would expect a TON of games against Edmonton, which would be interesting given the Vipers and Ccats were pissed at the NL for proposing that the two teams play eachother 32 times in a 96 game schedule rather than actually come up with a decent schedule.
But then, if it is a one year thing while the league looks at completing a four team Canadian division, so be it.
The other two funnies in that press release was that Calgary has an impressive management team (lol), and that they avoid mentioning Edmonton at all. I know they don't want to steal the Ccats thunder for tomorrow, but really, nobody is foolish enough to buy that Calgary is coming in alone.

just by glancing over the rosters, the caliber of playing should be slightly better than the vipers if not the same, I see some legit d-1 schools and a few guys who got a cup of coffee in the bigs. Hopefully we can see some decent pro baseball in this city for the first time in a while as the vipers can use this as a clean slate ! how I wish we could follow the likes of the Winnipeg Goldeneyes, with their pristine field and fan support

The GBL is hoping to put teams in Kamloops and Saskatoon in time for the 2008 season (!).
And, the Vipers will be filing a lawsuit against the Northern League.

oh wow...I was thinking the next two canadian teams would be after the next season...but their talking about for the upcoming season!
