If someone's overweight to begin with that means they don't get much exercise.. changing eating habbits AND trying to add exercise into it is too much for most people (as proven by the number of people that actually accomplish it).
Why is it bad to learn the correct amount of food to eat, eat that correct amount to maintain a low weight, and then when closer to a normal weight with more energy they can increase their activity levels. Or even if they don't, they still know how much they can eat to maintian a good weight.

A few years ago, I did Body for Life. You have to work at it for the full 12 weeks, but I lost 42 pounds (it was a little much).
Since then I have been able to maintain by cutting a lot of sugar and fast food, and drinking a lot of water. Exercise, exercise, exercise.
Pretty simple actually. The book is worth the investment.

Weight Watchers. It basically teaches you how to be conscientious with your food. My mother-in-law started weight watchers so my wife joined up too. My wife no longer does it as she is pregnant agian, but my mother-in-law is continuing on with it. You get so many points a day that you can eat up to without going over. You calculate the points of the foods/liquids you consume based on calories, fat and something else. It is recommended that you eat as close to your daily points limit as you can. You are allowed extra points for working out, and that is calculated on the lenth and intensity of your workout.
Since my wife has all the materials and info on weight watchers I recently decided to do it on my own. After the 1st week I lost 4 lbs. I don't know the program inside and out yet, but it has worked for my wife, it is working for my mother-in-law and I am impressed with my early results.
It isn't so much of a lose weight quick program but a program where you lose weight while learning how to be healthy.

Because people like to feel superior to others, makes them feel better I suppose. Or because they for some reason think that having sympathy means accepting the problem as ok..
I think it's possible to have sympathy for all of those you listed, they made those decisions for a reason and in a specific context.
Most overweight people do realize they have no one to blame but themselves. But it's not like they sat down one day and said "You know, I'd be much happier as a fatass, I'm going to gain 100 pounds. It'll be great when society hates me, people judge me without even talking to me, and I can't even look at myself or go clothes shopping without hating myself. That'll be great!"
As has been said, if it was easy then everyone would do it. It's not easy, there's many different psychological issues that go along with it, and trying to address the physical side without addressing the mental side will fail more often than not. It might just be as simple as not having any self-discipline and learning that, or it might be more complicated.
I like the whole "don't judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes" idea.

I lost 15 pounds without even thinking about it last year.
All I did was set up this cross country ski machine in the corner of my living room. When the Flames games were on, I would take a "shift" whenever Jarome Iginla stepped on the ice.
I got pretty thankful that OT was only 5 min. I wasn't sure what I was going to do if we had a Playoff OT game.

My wife did LA Weight Loss and was very very happy with it. They really spent a lot of time with her and helped instruct on the right things to eat, all the meals are with real food from a grocery store. She lost her target weight easily, she said she didn't even feel she was on a diet. I've spoken with a few other ones that have the same feedback. It could depend on which office you go to as well, the NE one on 32nd is the one she's gone to.
Herbal Magic I'd be skeptical about, anything that promotes a special pill.. likely it's just a low calorie diet combined with education and coaching.
Dr. B will get very fast results (5lbs a week or more), but is quite expensive. And it's SUPER low calorie (like 850 a day).
|
Dr. B also worked for me. I've kept the weight off now for 9 months now since I finished it (lost ~80 lbs with them).

That sounds like self-defeatist thinking to me. Choosing a chicken breast over a steak AND walking 5 km is too freaking hard?
Eating decently and doing some sort of exercise shouldn't be that difficult unless you're handicapped by something other then your own weak will.

Well if it was that simple.....you just put the whole psychology thing out of bussiness. For you and me it might be that simple. For others it doesn't appear to be.

I don't think something like that is a good idea.
My wife had a coworker who went on it. She lost TONS of weight but she also had to have her gallbladder taken out because of it. And as soon as she went off it, the weight came right back on.
I'd rather live life overweight then spend the rest of my life on a 850 calorie a day diet.

My wife and her father went on Dr Bernstein's program before her and I got married last year and the results were very good, and very fast. It is hardcore, though. Very low calorie, expensive, and you are under constant monitoring from the doctors and nurses. To some, that may be comforting, but to me, I always thought that a program that has doctors looking at blood and urine samples kind of implies that what you are doing is potentially harmful.
My father in law lost like 90 pounds in a matter of months on that program. People that hadn't seen him in a long time honestly did not recognize him at our wedding.

Yeah, its not really a weight loss regimen...but it has that effect! I just think that you feel great, and its not gimmicky or rocket science....eat properly and exercise!

I would not trust a group that promotes "herbs" or "magic". There is a body of medical science that shows us how to lose weight.

Furthermore...I wouldn't trust anything that wants you to come in and see their sales spiel first before they'll disclose price.

You think I am trying to knock anyone down? Sorry if you feel that way.
AND...it is that easy. I lost about 65-70 pounds by doing exactly what Dion suggested along with running 8KM 3-4 times a week. It works, you just have to put in the effort. Weight watchers is not putting in effort. Get out there and work for it.

I'm trying to compare what exercising for an overweight person is like to people who just say "just go out and run". If you have 150 extra pounds (or even 50 pounds), try lifting that much weight and then imagine trying to run with it.
Not saying exercise is impossible though, like you said walking is a good start.. or swimming or whatever.

Well if they're overweight, then obviously it is too hard for them. I'm just saying that knowing what and how much to eat at your current activity level is a good thing. Some people have to pay much closer attention to what goes in and how much they're burning to maintain their weight than others who seem to be able to eat whatever they want and never gain anything.
If they start simply by reducing calories and lose some weight, then that may be encouraging enough to start some exercise too, but even if it doesn't they'll still be able to maintain a good weight. Being sedentary and normal weight is still better than sedentary and overweight.

People don't accomplish it because of the North American lifestyle. This is another discussion for another day. They number of overweight people in North America is WAY more than Europe and they eat way worst than we do.
Being overweight in most cases is a choice. I used to be really fat. I made changes. If someone has bad knees there are other forms of exercise (not as efficient, but still do work) that they can do like those fancy run/stepper things you see at gyms.
Sorry if I ofended anyone here, but to exercise regularly and eat right is not hard. It is just a choice. Instead of sitting on the couch all day or at a pub go for a walk if that is all you can do at the very least.

My parents used something called the South Beach Fat Flush, and both lost about 20lbs in two weeks, no joke. Now lots of people they know are on it.
