Hah, that's so not what I expected. I started noticing these plates years ago, and came to the reasoned conclusion that they must be promoting their religion. I figured the "VE" must be "Victory Evangelical" and the 6 was their location. Then the initials identified them. I thought each congregation had a different number, and then wondered what happened when they got real big, i.e. VE124GE, but I never saw anything but VE6.

Now I know the real reason, thanks!

Just me, but I really hope that I am never part of a situation so dire where the proper authorities have given up/are so overwhelmed that the only option is to summon amatuer radio ethusiasts in their cars to maintain public calm/peace/sanity.

They are commonly used in large scale natural distasters when the infrastructure goes down. They were widely used early on during the flooding of New Orleans to relay messages between centers and to send messages for rescue. The cell and radio systems were otherwise out of commission and HAM operators with their generators and large transmit range really helped.

Can't recall any times they've been utilized to that extent in Canada... closest I bet would be the Quebec ice storm.

I, for one, would be the first to welcome our new HAM Radio Enthusiast Overlords.

LOL, well, I think it is more to have an alternate communications framework or at least another set of eyes with immediate communication abilities. They help patrol Hallowe'en an keep an eye out for trouble, and since their radios have a greater range and can run on batteries, during power outages they are handy folk.
