You actually killed a palmetto bug?
I really should of taken a photograph of it as I understand its extremely rare for them to grow that big.

Im tellin ya....the thing was as ugly as anything imaginable. It had 1" long antennae, and 8 wings. It actually clung to the ceiling in the basement in a hoizontal position...like it was sucked to the surface with its mouth.

freakin gives me the heebeejeebees thinking about it.

The cat was pissed I wouldnt let him eat it...though I think it was the right decision as thing could of been exposed to some nuclear waste kind of thing to get to that size. Only seen two of these things in 7+ years down here, so they are at least rare for this area.

Well, after reading the testimonials in this thread from Lanny, pope04 and Iowa Flames Fan in regard to their reactions to "little" critters, I think that you should tell the little woman in the house about these things. Contrary to what Crusader has said about not telling wifey, it instead seems that wifey knows how to deal with these "monsters" that come and terrorize the man of the house.

My wife is starting a postdoc at UPenn, so I've cobbled together some adjunct teaching between Drexel and Philadelphia University for now. Hopefully I can get a temporary position at either Westchester or Temple next year--the money's a lot better. (though if I teach at Temple I may have to invest in a firearm--not the safest neighbourhood.

Lanny: your story made me feel a little better. This thing wasn't two inches, more like an inch and a half, and certainly it was no palmetto bug. Even it was a bit hard to kill, though--took some "elbow grease" before I could crush its carapace, as it was sitting on plush carpet.

I think I will call Orkin. We're renting, and I did some research online--it turns out the landlord is responsible for keeping the place free of pests. Given the mouse problem that I mentioned, I see no reason not to bring in a pro, if it's not going to cost too much.

Big change moving from Iowa City to Philadelphia! Good luck!

But isn't the main question whether you can TYPE it when you're loaded?

I actually thought about this--since I'm from Calgary, not Iowa--and people might get the impression that I have some emotional connection to that godforsaken cultural wasteland. I wound up deciding that I've been IFF for long enough that I probably can't change it. Besides, I think there's already a "Flames_Fan_in_Philly" or some such thing. Thirdly, I've always sensed that the mods find name changes annoying, and I don't see the need to rock the boat.
