If you run Hijack this...you can select each file...mark the box beside it, and click remove down at the bottom.

More or less.

if the pop-ups you are getting look like Windows system messages (no need to have IE open), then all that is happening is your Windows Messaging service is running. All you need to do is disable the windows messaging service.

What is happening is there is computer out there, scanning for computers running this service and sending netsend messages to computers that have this port open. Stop the service, and the messages stop.

As for securing wireless, you just have to set a password for you to connect. Your router should be able to provide you with the ability to do this. When you set up your wireless connection, don't choose open, select one of the secure options. It will generate a code base on the text you enter. Then you need to connect to your wireless network, and enter the password your router generated for you.

It depends on what router you're using. If your using a linksys... log in to the router 192.168.1.1, then default userid/password is admin/admin (you may not have to enter a userid). Once you're it there should be a tab for wireless security and turn on encryption. BUT DO NOT USE WEP!!!! It is a pile of garbage and can be broken in to, in less than 3 mins.

Doesn't the OP's wireless nic need to be able to understand the encryption algo?
If it only understands WEP, then the OP is stuck isn't he?

yeah... but any card made within the last 3 years understands WEP and WPA by default. It may not understand the newer versions of WPA (using rotational AES etc).

And driver updates should make most cards work.
What may not ever support newer encryptions are the WAP, unless it is updateable via firmware.

Personally, I use WPA-AES, although I should set up a longer key than I currently use.

And change the default password on your router!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
