1) PVR is your friend.
2) Find a hobby for your significant other.
3) Grow a pair.

I know MLB, NFL and NHL fairly well. I am not as versed on the whole NHL as I was when I was 10-25 (when I got married). I have the centre ice package and try to watch a few games other than the Flames per week, but it's tough.

The NFL I watch pretty much year round. I am slacking this year, but usually I know of every signing, injury, retirement, mini-camp injury etc. The NFL Network is so much better than the NHL Network for keeping you up to date on league happenings. It's not even a contest. The NHL Network shows highlights for half the day and crappy old stuff the rest. The NFL Network, even in the off-season, has new programming every day.

As for MLB, I am mostly versed on the Jays, but am pretty knowledgable on the whole league.

I guess being in fantasy pools is the main reason for all of this. I take that stuff pretty serious as the pools I am in generally pay out about $1,000 for the winner. There are about 12 of my buddies who are in the same pools for all of these sports. I pretty much ignore basketball.

My wife says that I have two vices. Hockey and Football. We watch all the Flames games at my house. And we never, ever, miss a Kansas City Chiefs game. The wife and the daughter actually get into it as well. They watch the Flames games on TV when I am at the Dome. I even buy them Chiefs related presents for the NFL season opener every year, make it seem like a speacil occasion for them. I even took the wife to Arrowhead two years ago.

Juggling a sports addiction and a family can be a challenge. Especially when my baby son starts to play hockey. But a PVR sure helps. I don't get to watch NHL center ice all evening anymore. Or watch 3 entire NFL games on Sunday anymore. But I still get to follow my favorite teams and never miss any action. I'm sure my wife would love to se the NFL network removed. I watch it constantly.
